As I continue on through the box of tapes that I located in my basement, here is a semi mysterious DJ Stretch Armstrong "Volume Four" tape. I could find zero info on this one, so I turned to (the mixtape master of the Philaflava forum) Andyman187 for some help. He determined that this tape is a recording from a Stretch & Bobbito show on Hot97 that aired Sundays from 12pm-2pm sometime in 1996. Andyman187 was also kind enough to study the audio and put together a tracklist for me. If anyone out there can help by filling in the blanks or correcting any mistakes, please leave a comment. And the .rar files contain all the scans plus the full j-card.

Recently we blessed you with G-Funk California. If that was not much for you, than try to digest this load of dope summer tracks from all over The States, alloted in 3 volumes, made by member of philaflava forum and owner of his own blog, Drayzee, http://drayzee.blogspot.com/. Drayzee was just kind enough to allow us to use his own work and to represent it via T.R.O.Y. Blog. Thank you Drayzee for this massive work.
"Drayzee Says: It's 'Em Summer Days" is a compilation based on g-funk/gangsta/jazz/funk music. Too bad it's not summer yet, however this project will certainly give you that summer vibe. I hope this will bump in your speakers 6 summers from now. The first volume contains more "party-like" songs, the second volume will contain more gangsta/cruisin' stuff, jazz & funk, and the third one will be for you to just chill on. I also used some St. Ides commercial once per 8-9 songs, just to give you the feeling that there still is a dope radio on earth bumpin' this.

When i first saw this compilation in the store, i must admit that the only artists that were familiar to me were Screwball and Godfather Don. After spotting the production credits from DJ Spinna, The Beatnuts, Erick Sermon and Marley Marl, I thought that I could handle the cost and copped it. I never regretted this investment.
There is no track that i can say is a weak link. I'm still unfamiliar with two names on here, Slade Savage and Big Meal, so feel free to fill me in on their info if you know anything.
You will enjoy this one, we can guarantee you that.

This isn't the first time I touched this topic on T.R.O.Y. because for some unexplainable reason I'm attached to this album. '93 was a year of classics, but it also contains many great obscure releases that fell by the wayside too. Let me start off by saying I was never a huge 3rd Bass fan. They had a few tracks I've enjoyed but for the most part they (mainly Serch) always came off a bit corny to me. Pete, not so much, he always had that cool swagger that made him a little less contrived than his counterpart. When the group broke up I don't think anyone shed a tear. They had a good run but their time was over. Hip-hop was moving in a different direction and did not contain 2 white boys rapping about the same humdrum shit for another 6 years.
No one can deny the hits they had, whether it was "The Gas Face," "Pop Goes The Weasel," "Steppin' To The A.M" or the Marley laced "Product Of The Environment." Two white dudes lucky to have careers in a black dominated sport enjoying every minute of it. They were not poet laureates. One rapper was the self-loathing lighthearted guy, while the other played the too cool for school steelo. Together it worked and with the help of Prince Paul, The Bomb Squad and some respectable co-signs from people ranging from EPMD, Henry Rollins to Russell Simons 3rd Bass become a legit rap act.
So where does that leave us? '92 the group officially split, Serch was dabbling in the production game with female rapper Boss, The Zebrahead soundtrack, and let us not forget finagling his way into one of the most important rap signings of all-time (Nas). He dropped a lackluster solo titled Return of the Product, which included the hit "Back To The Grill" with Nasty Nas, Chubb Rock & Red Hot Lover Tone. But other then that track, which gained notoriety for its use by Kid Capri Def Comedy Jam, the album fell flat.
A year after the breakup Pete Nice got the call from Russell Simmons and before you knew it "Dust To Dust" was in stores. With the help of friends K.M.D (MF Doom), Sam Sever and The Beatnuts, the production on Dust To Dust was really gratifying. Samples ranging from Velvet Underground. Iron Butterfly, X-Clan, Otis Redding, Ramsey Lewis to Frank Sinatra combine to bring forth an eccentric background for Pete Nice's verbals. I still can't tell you what DJ Richie Rich actually did. Street cred employee?
Tracks like Rat Bastard, Kick The Bobo, Verbal Message, The Lumberjack, The Rapsody, 3 Blind Mice featuring Kurious or Rich Bring 'Em Back" featuring the debut of Cage help balance out the album. Check it out! --Philaflava
Where is Pete Nice today? Well after quiting the rap game Pete started his own Baseball memorabilia store in Cooperstown. In 2003, he published his first book, Baseball Legends of Brooklyn's Green-Wood Cemetery, under his real name. He has also been working to secure some property for an official grave site of Negro League players.
In early 2008, Pete opened McGreevy's 3rd Base Bar, a sports bar in Boston with Dropkick Murphys' band member Ken Casey. The bar recently was named Best Sports Bar In Boston by Citysearch.
Here we have the promo cd single of 'Bas Blasta - Dangerous' from 1995. Bas Blasta started his career on Nice & Smooth's second album Ain't A Damn Thing Changed, on a posse cut titled "Down The Line" along with Asu, Guru, Mello T, & Preacher Earl. He then released his first solo 12" single "Ain't Whatcha Do" produced by The Beatnuts in 1994. He followed right after with "Dangerous/bw The Rhythm" produced by The Groove Merchantz. Kid from Kid N Play has some background vocals on the chorus of "Dangerous" and "The Rhythm" is a posse cut with Fat Joe, Godfather Don, Juju, & Lord Finesse. Unfortunately on the CD Single, you only get "Dangerous" but at least it's in cdq. A video was shot for it which I embedded below. He was supposed to released a solo album titled "The Mouth That Roared" but it ended up being shelved and has never been leaked.
You already know what it is, but now it's better. T.R.O.Y. forum regular, vaporized, went and laced the acapellas of A.W.O.L. with some of the highly sought after Hydra Beats instrumentals. Whether you thought A.W.O.L was dope, mediocre, or garbage, you're gonna want to give this another listen right about now. It's a completely different look over these mostly mellow mid 90's soundscapes. I've had this in constant rotation for a couple of weeks now, and can tell you that this will be something to revisit often in the future.
Two tracks had to be left off because they just didn't work. And that may be for the best because we all know this hip hop thing can't be forced. My top 3 tracks at this moment are "Never Change", "Street Life", and "Chillin". I'll leave you previews of these three below the tracklist.
01. AZ - A.W.O.L. (E-Boogie blend)
02. AZ - Can't Stop (Nick Wiz blend)

04. AZ - Never Change (Beatnutsblend)
05. AZ ft. Half A Mil & Begetz - Street Life (Unsociablesblend)
Thanks to digitalmullet and dirt_dog for compiling Lucien's discography. Lucien was also part of the Hip-Hop Against Apartheid movement who released Ndodemyama(Free South Africa) in 1990. "Someone offered me $500 for the acetate of the Beatnuts' remix of Mobb Deep 'Shook Ones Part 1'." - Stretch Armstrong
The above is quoted from this interview with Stretch Armstrong by DJ Eli over at the TurntableLab's blog. Check the interview here.
I had this on a cassette dubbed from the infamous Stretch and Bobbito show back in 94 and didn't realize it was a Beatnuts remix. I always figured it was a Stretch homemade remix or an acapella blended over a rare instrumental. Well, needless to say, I lost that tape probably within a month of taping it off the radio and recently is the first time I heard it since. Now, I'm not really a religious guy in any way at all. But I always thought that if there was a heaven, all my lost Stretch and Bob tapes would be there along with everything else I ever lost. Like all my WBAI, WNYU, Red Alert, Hank Love and Halfpint, and Awesome Two tapes. Plus all the shows I didn't have on tape. Not to mention every rare piece of vinyl ever pressed in the world. In this heaven, I would have unlimited copies of everything and my celestial neighbors would envy my godly collection. But in order for them to get a copy of anything[which I have unlimited amounts of anyway] they would have to offer me up 3 virgins of different ethnicities for me to have my way with. If heaven is anything like that at all, may the good lord strike me down before I finish this post.
Oh well. Time to stop dreaming and move it on along. Here's another excerpt from that Stretch interview:
"Ha- well you did manage to get me to give you the EPMD/LL Cool J "Rampage" demo. How ill is that? We used to play that on the air like it was no thing. For those of you that don't know it, the beat is different, and you hear the 2" stop, LL tell the engineer to take it back to the top, and then he spits rhymes that never made the album. It's a demo, but it's also a snapshot of the recording, hearing LL talk and experiment a little."
Yeah, I had this one on tape, too. I'm not sure if the one we have for you here is the entire version of that demo. But, hey, it's 3 minutes of some ill hip hop history. LL destroys it, as he was hungry again at that time trying to get back in the limelight. You'll notice that PMD spits the famous, "While you were banging on tables, I was banging Snow White," backwards. Instead, he says,"While I was banging on tables, you were banging Snow White."
After I stop typing, enjoy both the Shook Ones Beatnuts remix and the partial Rampage demo. Thanks go out to jamo609 and serch4beatz, both of the Philaflava T.R.O.Y. forum. The amount of rare Stretch and Bobbito shows and hard to find mid 90's mixtapes that these guys have been uploading is abundant. Don't sleep, that's only one thread out of hundreds where these got unearthed. Last week officially marked my first year as being a part of the Philaflava message boards, and I can't stress enough how conducive to my hip hop life it has been.
If you're not down, do yourself a solid and join up. You won't regret it. Just make sure you go directly to the T.R.O.Y. forum.
Galt MacDermot is easily one of my favorite soul-jazz pianists/organists of all time. After discovering "Duffer" on a breaks compilation about a decade back, I decided to snatch up whatever I could find. Fortunately, a good portion of his late 60s/early 70s albums and soundtracks had been repressed: "Woman Is Sweeter", "Shapes Of Rhythm", "Cotton Comes To Harlem", etc. Also, Galt released the amazing "Up From The Basement" compilations in early 2000, and both volumes were entirely composed of unreleased tracks, including an alternate version of "Duffer"!
Unfortunately, I had a difficult time tracking down his 1971 masterpiece "The Nucleus". The Chicago-based record store "Dusty Groove Records" was purchasing 'em from Galt's dead stock at a rate of ten per order, and I was always late on the draw. What made it worse is that Dusty Groove wouldn't let you reserve a copy in advance! I'd search ebay and see it going for upwards of $100 (most likely from sellers who purchased numerous copies from Dusty Groove). Eventually, I got fed up with the BS and decided to contact Galt himself. I was able to snatch up three copies of "The Nucleus" at $25 a piece, as well as two copies of his classic "Hair Cuts" LP from 1969 (instrumental renditions). I also purchased a gang of others, including "Ghetto Suite", "Isabel's A Jezebel", "Two Gentlemen Of Verona", "The Karl Marx Play", etc. Suffice to say, I was a very happy man.
Galt's late 60s/early 70s catalog remains largely untapped in terms of sampling potential. Here's a good portion of what's been utilized up to this point (although my cut-off period for all things hip hop related is right around 2001/2002, so you'll have to excuse me for not being familiar with artists that have sampled Galt in recent years).

As a bonus, here is the amazing "Hair Cuts" LP that I purchased from Galt himself back in 2001. I remastered it with click repair.

Obviously, hit up google for out-of-print Galt records like "The Nucleus", etc. Also, make sure to purchase everything that has been repressed over the past decade. If you're a fan, then you owe it to the man. Hell, I've probably contributed at least $300 to his cause!
Last month we laced you with the Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth "Basement Demos" EP prior to it dropping. In fact, we've pretty much done that with all their releases. Big shout-out to One Leg Up, but here in the U.S. we're living in what you might call a recession so dropping $80 on a piece of wax doesn't rank high on the priority list.
So for those who didn't get a chance to cop or download, now you can get them all-in-one!

Chi-Ali Griffith.I think everyone already knows the story behind this guy, but let's recapitulate it once more, in short notes.
Chi-Ali started rapping around age 12-13. He has made his first appearance in The Apollo club in London, together with Queen Latifah and Jungle Brothers. He jumped in after Afrika from the Jungle Brothers missed his flight to London. He also said that he had wrote around 40% of his first and only album and the rest had been done by Dres, De La Soul, Q-tip and Phife and of course The Beatnuts who were involved in the production of the album as well. In the interviews which you can see if you scroll down the whole page, Chi-Ali talks about those days and about the time after he has commited that famous murder in 2000.

Check also Roadrunner version with Dove rapping. Thanks to Roy Johnson. My guessing about this would be that Dove probably wanted to show to Chi-Ali how to rap and flow over that beat.
I got this LP years ago from hiphopsite.com. I can't quite remember the year, nor can I find any real information about it, so let's just say it was 2002. I placed my order, waited several weeks only to find out they had sold out and wouldn't be getting any more. They issued me a store credit and I moved on with my life. About 2 months later a mysterious package arrived on my door step, and now I share with you:
"DJ Premier presents Empire Management production. An original one of a kind release "Planet Of The Beats Volume 1". A reflection of classic hip hop instrumentals combined with movie dialogues from great movies. Featuring music from DJ Premier, Mobb Deep, A Tribe Called Quest, The Beatnuts, DJ Spinna, Show & AG & others. Recorded at D&D Studios N.Y.C., U.S.A."
A few months ago Kurious Jorge dropped his Top 10 posse cuts list on T.R.O.Y., this time we're dropping some great news and a few gems ourselves. K-Jorge and The Beatnuts finally reunited after all these years and are working together for Jorge's forthcoming album "II."
A T.R.O.Y. contributer Kimani was kind enough to bless us with this Kurious compilation titled "Forever Constipated."
It's highly unlikely this was ever an official release but it's still a great recap of Jorge's career that. Check it out and stay tuned for the new album "II."
