Sounds Like The 90s (Best Of) Vol. 12

I can't believe it but this marks the 12th edition of Sounds Like The 90s. Instead of bringing you new music this month we're bringing you a recap of sorts. Below is a double disc compiled of the best of Sounds Like The 90s throughout this year. And to close things out it was only right we brought back Blake and Tal for the artwork.

Many of you will remember the De La Buhloone Mindstate ad featured in various Hip-hop mags in '93. The image below is actually the real ad taken from URB when it was still a Cali-only free newspaper. The image was scanned straight from the paper and left in its current condition. Its not Sounds Like The 90s, this shit IS from the 90s.

So here is to another month of music and a nice way to close out 2009. A special thanks goes out to all the artists who have contributed, graphic designers and of course you for supporting. We'll be continuing the SLT9s series in 2010 but for now enjoy this double fix. --Philaflava

Best Of Westwood Radio Freestyles - Nas, Biggie, OC, Das Efx, Cam'Ron...

"I’ve spent the last few weeks sorting through that dusty box of tapes that so many older Hip Hop heads have stashed away somewhere and have been digitizing the various treats I’ve come across.

As Hip Hop was scarce on English radio in the 90s, most of these tapes are recordings of Tim Westwood’s show on BBC Radio 1. Up until 1994, Westwood only broadcast in London and the surrounding area, first on pirate stations LWR and Kiss FM, and then legitimately on Capital FM.

A move to the BBC in 1994 gave him two 3 hour shows every week and meant that Hip Hop heads nationwide finally had the opportunity to hear first hand the exclusives and guest appearances that would make up Tim’s show. It often meant staying in on a Friday or Saturday night, but as some of these freestyles prove, it was worth it!

I was going to do a profile of Big Tim but then remembered that Stretch Armstrong gave him a mention on his blog a while back and I couldn’t think of a better person to rubber stamp Westwood’s contribution to Hip Hop radio."

Stretch Armstrong, speaking on The Flavor Unit track ‘The Flavor Unit Assassination Squad’:

"Bobbito and I got hip to this record via the homie Tim Westwood in London who used to have what may have been the most progressive hip-hop show on earth in the late 80's. Because he was free to operate outside of the beef that had split NYC rap radio in the late 80's but also was very close to both Red and Marley (though closer to Marley who eventually would broadcast a version of In Control on his show in the UK), Tim would bless the airwaves with crazy exclusives and remixes, AND, influenced by his roots in 80's Jamaican and UK dancehall, was the first, and perhaps only, hip-hop personality to get all the hot emcees to re-record their hits with his name in them, sound-clash style. Many in the UK complained that Tim didn't support home-grown talent, but we sure didn't care, 'cause we'd frequently hear shit from his tapes first, sometimes to never be heard anywhere else. I'd have to confirm it with Aaron Fuchs, but I believe Tuff City only released this record after we played it on KCR from a cassette from Westwood's show."

Vinyl Selections: Masta Ace, God Sunz, Dee Surreal

What's the deal people? Its Tired & Broke (from 12inchers),and I was granted the great opportunity to bring 3 select pieces of wax from my little collection and share with the visitors of this site.

The first treat I have served up is from the Tru Criminal Catalog and features the duo God Sunz with O.G.C. number 1 Starang Wondah on the banger “1-718.” This is a single track 12” with 4 versions of the song including Dirty, Clean, Instrumental & Accapella. “1-718” features all 3 emcees going back and forth rhyming a few bars and then allowing the next man come in and kick another random 2 to 3 bars. This track isn’t anything ground breaking but its surprisingly effective. The eerie synths with the simple beat provide the perfect layer for hood inspired metaphors and mic tough talk.

The next single is an unknown gem from an emcee named Dee Surreal. I honestly don’t know anything about dukes beside the 12” piece of wax I own of his. The A-Side, “Beast Within” is decent but clearly gets outshined by the B-Side, “Call Of The Wild.” On “Call Of The Wild” Dee gets blessed with an ill piano back drop with heavy drums and shows more of his talent on this track. His first lines describe him perfectly, ..Survival Of The fit and it won’t quit/ while 99.9% don’t know jack about this rap nigga, figure it out. It seems clear Dee knows not too many ears will hear this, but as long as u got crate addicts like me I hope to change that. Dee Surreal also delivers clever lines like…Napoleon rippin every Bone Apart… to flex some wordplay for the listeners. The next snappin beat provided by his producer, Cave Precise, is the icing on the cake even tho the intro/outro to “Call Of The Wild” are pretty detestable. Single includes LP Version, Radio Version and Instrumental for both tracks.

The last piece of wax of this trio is another collaboration between J-Love and the Juice Crew legend Masta Ace. These 2 first hooked up on the ill “NFL” 12” Single and the outcome was a treat for all hip-hop heads. This time around we get a 2-track delight with “3Some” and “Splash.” The A-Side, “3Some” consist of Ace using his elaborative story-telling skills. It starts with him describing his man Shawn and his past, then he quickly shifts to the present, where Shawn meets a female and things pick up from there. The end to this joint is pretty slick and shows why Masta Ace is one of the best to ever do it. The next joint “Splash” is a smooth late night banger that originally appeared on Tommy Boy’s “Hip-Hop 101”. J-Love impresses with more smooth production that allows Masta Ace to splash on the track. Ace shows more lyrical prowess with bars like …Got Spice like Dijon/ My Legion from the Brooklyn Region/, Ima preach on/ And baby if you 19 like Keyshawn/ Ima go Deep on it/So don’t sleep on it. Overall this is easily a great commodity to have in the crates (as well as the 2 previously mentioned pieces of wax.) It comes with Dirty, Clean & Instrumental versions. Enjoy.

The Groove Merchantz, a team consisting of Godfather Don and V.I.C. enlist Brand Nubian member Sadat X to help give this personal ode to fam locked up an even more intimate vibe. The drums remain, but in comes the horns that help to recreate the track. And while the original hook sported by Q-Tip was soothing, this one is more conspicuous and catchy.

The original's slow, plodding beat never sounded quite right combined with the raps by Kool Keith and Ced Gee. The drums have been brought forward and the awkwardly placed trumpet has been wisely moved to the background, creating a much more aurally pleasing sound and really letting you concentrate on the lyrics.

While the infectious "Mysterious Vibes" sample is always appreciated, Pete Nice decided to give "I'm Kurious" some more bap for it's boom. The lyrics may be the same, but the track certainly isn't.

It's bad enough MC Eiht got at DJ Quik, but to add insult to injury DJ Premier remixed possibly the best Def Wish track out of the series and made the DJ Slip verison absolutely forgettable. This was one of the first Westcoast remixes Work of Mart produced.

Songs that sample David McCallum's The Edge

While Dr. Dre made this sample famous for The Next Episode, there are a handful of other artists who have either sampled other parts of the song or flipped it themselves. I think every one of these is dope in their own right, and who doesn't feel their head nodding when the stacatto strings walk up and down the track or when the lush flute solo appears? David Axelrod, who produced the original track, continues to be the most sampled artist in rap behind only James Brown.

I think the Death Letter remix is my favorite of these - "Nozzles aimed at your nostrils" has made it into my daily vernacular. Drop a comment on who feel did the best job with the sample.

Biography of Digga

Ask most hip-hop fans who their favorite rapper is and they'll probably answer with an emphatic "Biggie!" Have them list their Top Ten All-Time Favorite Hip-Hop albums and bet you Ready To Die will be included somewhere in it. Then finally ask them to list their five favorite songs from that album. Guaranteed that three of their favorite five will be "One More Chance," "Me And My Bitch" and "Everyday Struggle." That would mean the producer behind the historical tracks of those classic songs has helped the Notorious B.I.G become, arguably, the Greatest Rapper of All-Time. No we're not talking about Puffy here (check the credits). We're talking about none other than MC/producer Digga (formerly known as Lord Digga).

For you true hip-hop heads, you might remember the name from Masta Ace's INC crew back in the early '90's. Anyone who even remotely followed Ace's career recalls his joints "Jeep Ass Niguh", "Who Ya Jackin" and "Drunken Style." Digga produced them all. But when Digga started noticing that the INC wasn't so incorporated, he decided to get gone. "It seemed like Ace was out for himself and trying to limit my potential. So I had to get out on my own and show the world what I was made of" states Digga. "It's sort of like how the Raptors held back Tracy McGrady, when he really had enough skills to be the best player in the league."

So Digga bounced and started doing things his way. Talk about your way being the right way. A year after his departure, Digga wound up being mentioned in Source magazine's Unsigned Hype section for his production and found he and his production partner's beat tape in the hands of an un-signed Biggie via Unsigned Hype editor Matt Life.

But despite producing tracks for faded artists like The Cella Dwellas ("Land Of The Lost" and "Realm 3") as well as household hip-hop names like ODB ("Brooklyn Zoo Remix"), Digga is more than a superb track chef with a keen engineer's ear, he's also the one of the fiercest you'll find in a vocal booth. There's none other who can mix witty intelligence, sharp humor and true hardcore so well and then serve it with a disciplined delivery and bully baritone. This is what had the West and East Coast underground in love with Digga back in '98 when he dropped "My Flows Is Tight." He beautifully used a sample from the theme music of the renown TV show "The Price Is Right" and an irresistible hook to distract listeners as they got hit upside their heads with raps as hard as granite. It was Digga at his best on all levels.
