Step One “Illegal Remixes Vol. 2” (2010)

The first volume of Illegal Remixes assembled by Step One proved quite popular, so here’s another batch of unofficial remixes for you.

There’s a good variety of flavours on this one, ranging from straight-up Hip Hop on the Meth, Xzibit and Mobb Deep tracks, to the reggae re-rubs of the Jungle Brothers and Fugees joints. The West Coast is represented on the ‘West Up!’ remix and the ATL gets a look in with 2 Outkast joints. As with the first set, some of these are ripped from vinyl, others have been posted on blogs and forums. I’ve credited the creators where possible so click the links and show them some love if you like what you hear.

dirt_dog Remix Packs 5 & 6

Some people love them, some people hate them, but here we go with the final installment of my Remix Packs. For #5, I bring you all the remixes that I loved in the 90's that lean heavily towards the alternative/metal/electronic side. I'm going to guess that Onyx and Biohazzard's collaboration for the Judgement Night Soundtrack went so well that they teamed up again for the "Slam" remix. And I liked the House Of Pain mix so much I don't see any reason that I wouldn't enjoy the Naughty By Nature track either. Dr. Octagon was ahead of his time and on some other level shit in 1996. Last up is Mr. Meth. It was a toss up between the the Prodigy Mix of "Release Yo Delf" and the Chemical Brothers mix for "Bring The Pain." Both are great in different ways.

Remix Pack 5
01 Onyx-Slam (Bionyx Remix)
02 House Of Pain-Shamrocks & Shenanigans (Boom Shalock Lock Boom) (Butch Vig Mix)
03 Dr. Octagon-Bear Witness (2 Turntables & A Razor Blade Re-Edit)
04 Method Man-Release Yo' Delf (Prodigy Mix)
05 Naughty By Nature-Hip Hop Hooray (Thrash Mix)

As an added bonus I've created a pack of alternative artists that received the remix treatment by the hip hop industry. Most are pretty obvious, the "Nickel Bag" remix was done by the Dust Brothers and "Make Out City" is by Mike Simpson (one half of the Dust Brothers). I truly feel that these 5 remixes are worth 15 minutes of your time. I've also cleverly combined Remix Packs 5 & 6 together so you're going to get these songs whether you want them or not.

Remix Pack 6
01 Sublime-Doin' Time (Marshall Arts Remix) feat. The Pharcyde
02 Beck-Where It's At (Make Out City) (Remix by Mike Simpson)
03 Rage Against The Machine-Bullet In The Head (Sir Jinx Remix)
04 Propellerheads-Take California & Party feat. Jungle Brothers
05 Filter-Hey Man Nice Shot (Nickel Bag)

Jungle Brothers - I Got U (CD 2006) Japan

In 2002, The Jungle Brothers released their sixth studio album titled "All That We Do". Did y'all think that it was their last studio album? No, in 2006, The J Beez released a Japan-only studio album titled "I Got U". I would normally never post new albums but I was thinking that since it hasn't been scheduled for a release outside of Japan, why not unearth it to you readers? I Got U has a experimental sound to it. The album combines an old school & funky sound from these Rap Legends (since '87). Mike G is definitely on point each tracks with Baby Bam on the production tip. If you can find it, Buy It! You won't be dissapointed! Enjoy,

1. Back On The Road
2. Beats On A String
3. Come Down
4. Down Right Funk
5. Funky Magic
6. Back To The Ol Skool
7. My Streets On Fire
8. Ital Stew (Skeewiff Mix)
9. I Got U
10. Sunshine
11. Take It Back

S.O.U.L. Samples

S.O.U.L. is an obscure early 70s funk group that released some of the absolute dopest tracks from that era. They recorded two albums in between the years of 1971 and 1973: "What Is It" and "Can You Feel It". From what I can gather, they disbanded shortly after the release of their second album, so unfortunately, their entire catalog contains less than 20 tracks. Producers that have sampled S.O.U.L. include Pete Rock, Marley Marl, The Large Professor, The Jungle Brothers, MF Doom, etc.

S.O.U.L. - Samples
1. S.O.U.L. - Burning Spear
2. Organized Konfusion - Releasing Hypnotical Gases
3. Pete Rock & CL Smooth - Go With The Flow
4. S.O.U.L. - Soul
5. Slick Rick - A Letter
6. Jungle Brothers - In Dayz 2 Come
7. Main Source - Fakin' The Funk
8. S.O.U.L. - Piece Of Mind
9. Craig G - What You're Used To
10. Main Source - Peace Is Not The Word To Play
11. S.O.U.L. - Message From A Black Man
12. MF Doom - Sarsaparilla (Instrumental)

Chi-Ali - The Youngest Native Tonguer

Chi-Ali Griffith. I think everyone already knows the story behind this guy, but let's recapitulate it once more, in short notes.

Chi-Ali started rapping around age 12-13. He has made his first appearance in The Apollo club in London, together with Queen Latifah and Jungle Brothers. He jumped in after Afrika from the Jungle Brothers missed his flight to London. He also said that he had wrote around 40% of his first and only album and the rest had been done by Dres, De La Soul, Q-tip and Phife and of course The Beatnuts who were involved in the production of the album as well.
In the interviews which you can see if you scroll down the whole page, Chi-Ali talks about those days and about the time after he has commited that famous murder in 2000.

Check also Roadrunner version with Dove rapping. Thanks to Roy Johnson.
My guessing about this would be that Dove probably wanted to show to Chi-Ali how to rap and flow over that beat.

Fifty RemixesYou Need To Hear (31-40)

Well, we're moving right along through the list and we here at T.R.O.Y. hope you've enjoyed what you've heard thus far.  If you've just arrived check out Selections 1-10, Selections 11-20, and Selections 21-30, and then devour today's picks.

31. Ice Cube "What Can I Do?" (Ali Shaheed Eastside Remix)

32. Masta Ace "Saturday Night Live" (L.A. Jay Remix)

33. Nas ft. Sadat X. "One Love" (One L Main Mix)

The Groove Merchantz, a team consisting of Godfather Don and V.I.C. enlist Brand Nubian member Sadat X to help give this personal ode to fam locked up an even more intimate vibe. The drums remain, but in comes the horns that help to recreate the track. And while the original hook sported by Q-Tip was soothing, this one is more conspicuous and catchy.

34. Hard 2 Obtain "Ghetto Diamond" (Remix)

35. Ultramagnetic MCs "Saga Of Dandy, The Devil, And Day" (Remix)

The original's slow, plodding beat never sounded quite right combined with the raps by Kool Keith and Ced Gee. The drums have been brought forward and the awkwardly placed trumpet has been wisely moved to the background, creating a much more aurally pleasing sound and really letting you concentrate on the lyrics.

36. Kurious "I'm Kurious" (Pete Nice Remix)

While the infectious "Mysterious Vibes" sample is always appreciated, Pete Nice decided to give "I'm Kurious" some more bap for it's boom. The lyrics may be the same, but the track certainly isn't.

37. Souls Of Mischief "Never No More" (76 Seville Mix)

38. Compton's Most Wanted "Def Wish II" (DJ Premiere Remix)
It's bad enough MC Eiht got at DJ Quik, but to add insult to injury DJ Premier remixed possibly the best Def Wish track out of the series and made the DJ Slip verison absolutely forgettable. This was one of the first Westcoast remixes Work of Mart produced.

39. Chi-Ali "Funky Lemonade" (Beatnuts Remix)

40. Jungle Brothers ft. Q-Tip "On The Road Again" (Remix)
