Frankenstein “Live From New York (The Remixx Album)” (1996)

One of my favorite pieces from my vinyl collection. I picked this up back in 1996 just for Method Man's "P.L.O. Style" remix and I was pleasantly surprised with all the other tracks. In the last few years I've tracked down audio for just about everything that Frankenstein has ever done. I sure wish he'd come out from wherever he's hiding (a teacher in Canada?) and bless us with some new material.

Step One “Illegal Remixes Vol. 2” (2010)

The first volume of Illegal Remixes assembled by Step One proved quite popular, so here’s another batch of unofficial remixes for you.

There’s a good variety of flavours on this one, ranging from straight-up Hip Hop on the Meth, Xzibit and Mobb Deep tracks, to the reggae re-rubs of the Jungle Brothers and Fugees joints. The West Coast is represented on the ‘West Up!’ remix and the ATL gets a look in with 2 Outkast joints. As with the first set, some of these are ripped from vinyl, others have been posted on blogs and forums. I’ve credited the creators where possible so click the links and show them some love if you like what you hear.

It appears that good things can happen when the UK gets blasted with the heaviest snow in 100 years. With the country coming to a complete halt, forum regular Step One had time to put together this sweet compilation of bootleg remixes and blends. The acapella of this track was definitely a favourite amongst producers, probably due to the amount of quotable lines from Red & Meth at their peak. This version uses the ‘Human Nature’ melody over EPMD's ‘You’re A Customer’ beat.

09 Mobb Deep-Hell On Earth (Paul Miles Remix)
Another UK remix, this time by Birmingham DJ Paul Miles (aka Pat Bateman).

LL Cool J: Respect The Architect

Sometimes you just gotta give it up for LL. Yeah he hasn't made the most memorable albums in the past 15 years but he is still making music. He gave us Radio, Bigger And Deffer, Walking With A Panther (my fav), Mama Said Knock You Out, 14 Shots To The Dome and Mr. Smith to name a few. Since them he's sprinkled us with some vintage LL, like "Ill Bomb."

LL, at age 41, still has it. He doesn't flex it like he can but if push came to shove LL could definitely retire a rapper of choice should he feel inclined to. While I can't validate whether or not this is a real album or that LL will even see a dime on it, I can say they are high quality (remastered) tracks of some of his greatest cuts. Even though we all could do without a handful (or even more) of some of them, the great tracks certainly overpower the weak ones. Download this jawn and remember just how vicious LL Cool J was on the mic. Hey Rick Rubin if you're reading this why not hit up James Todd Smith and do another album together? Some people love them, some people hate them, but here we go with the final installment of my Remix Packs. For #5, I bring you all the remixes that I loved in the 90's that lean heavily towards the alternative/metal/electronic side. I'm going to guess that Onyx and Biohazzard's collaboration for the Judgement Night Soundtrack went so well that they teamed up again for the "Slam" remix. And I liked the House Of Pain mix so much I don't see any reason that I wouldn't enjoy the Naughty By Nature track either. Dr. Octagon was ahead of his time and on some other level shit in 1996. Last up is Mr. Meth. It was a toss up between the the Prodigy Mix of "Release Yo Delf" and the Chemical Brothers mix for "Bring The Pain." Both are great in different ways.

Once I got my hands on the Method Man mix, I discovered there was one for The Funk Doctor Spock. Sold. Again with this Mister Cee mix, nothing too fancy, nothing too special, one good freestyle, several remixes and one live track. But the real catch on this disc are the two unreleased tracks. Hot 97 Radio Freestyles Pt.3 (1996)

Here's volume 4 of the Hot 97 Freestyle AllStars vinyl series. This is probably the release with the least rare freestyles since most of the ones included were featured on Funkmaster Flex "60 Minutes of Funk Vol.1". But for example, you get the full session of the Redman & Keith Murray freestyle which is 15 min. long while it was cut short to 4 min. in the Funk Flex mixtape. The other exclusive freestyles are from Da Bush Babees, Jay-Z, and Krs-One.

Hot 97 Radio Freestyles Pt.2 (1996)

About 3 weeks ago, I posted a 12" containing a few Hot 97 radio freestyles from the likes of Nas, Cormega, ATCQ, Wu-Tang, and Heltah Skeltah. It was part of a series of vinyls called Freestyle AllStars released on Wild Style Records. I only owned volume 2 of the series .

After seeing a comment from dirt_dog, he informed me that he had a few of those other volumes. He immediately ripped all the volumes so that it could be shared to everyone. Below you will find all the artists involved on the first installment.
