Ego Trip singles - 1979

Perhaps the greatest bathroom reader of all time, Ego Trip's Big Book of Rap Lists is one of those books that any rap nerd wishes they would have written. If you flip to the back starting on page 314, they have several lists that compile all the greatest singles by year from 1979 through 1998. For TROY purposes, we're going to post up 1979-1988.

Several years ago, I downloaded all of these years from a blogger who took the time to compile all of these songs together. For the life of me, I can't remember what the site was (or if it even still exists), so if you think this is your hard work being reposted here, please leave a comment on the blog with your site and we'll give you proper credit.

Songs that sample David McCallum's The Edge

While Dr. Dre made this sample famous for The Next Episode, there are a handful of other artists who have either sampled other parts of the song or flipped it themselves. I think every one of these is dope in their own right, and who doesn't feel their head nodding when the stacatto strings walk up and down the track or when the lush flute solo appears? David Axelrod, who produced the original track, continues to be the most sampled artist in rap behind only James Brown.

I think the Death Letter remix is my favorite of these - "Nozzles aimed at your nostrils" has made it into my daily vernacular. Drop a comment on who feel did the best job with the sample.

All of the following tracks are taken off of this Official Jointz release and have appeared in one way or another on just about every single Lord Finesse "Lost Tapes" style ever put together since he produced all the following tracks. I'm sure I'm missing some other stuff these 2 put out so if any of our readers have a desire to share, please do so.

Xperado is just an all around solid rhymer with a fast style who sounds great over Lord Finesse production, and it's an absolute shame Karim Jamal didn't release more material than his 2 tracks. Pelon Rising is vintage mid 90's DITC sound with an incredibly sick sample and Jamal catching wreck with 3 verses of rugged rhymes. Ghetto Appeal slows the adrenaline down a little bit while he spits about what makes his style the best.

If you dismiss Heavy D. as only being the guy who rapped the In Living Color theme song, then you are doing yourself a disservice. The Money earnin' Mount Vernon native, along with the Fat Boys, made it possible for fatties everywhere to gain respect for their talent rather than their smooth looks, as evidenced on funk strong songs like Chunky But Funky, The Overweight Lover's In The House, and Overweighter, the latter which samples ABC by the Jackson 5.


But it's not all about the calories - this is just a pure fun party album, much in the vein of lighthearted fare like Nice and Smooth's debut. Cuts like On The Dance Floor, Mr Big Stuff (remix), and Moneyearnin' Mount Vernon will put a smile on your face thinking about how rap used to be. Producers include Teddy Riley (who along with Heavy D helped usher in the New Jack Swing era), Marley Marl, and Al B Sure.


One more thing - I'd be remiss in not mentioning the name of this blog comes from Pete Rock and CL Smooth's dedication to Trouble T Roy, one of Heavy D's dancers who died on tour in 1990. RIP

Tuff Crew - Back To Wreck Shop

I have to admit, I'm not the most knowledgable person when it comes to this Philly supergroup, so please leave a comment to fill in some info gaps or just drop some knowledge. This late 80's multi-ethnic crew's most notable member is probably DJ Too Tuff, who is widely credited with starting the turntablist movement, as evidenced on the mindblowing track Behold The Detonator, which is probably my favorite strictly scratching track of all time.


I'm not going to pretend like Tuff Crew was anything more than a group of proficient emcees - there's no groundbreaking work contained here that would make Rakim shake in his boots. This is simply a very good album with street lyrics that will make you remember an era long gone (Wreck Shop, Show 'Em Hell, Got To Be Funky, Down With The Program). However, when they try to rap about the ladies, it comes off as painfully corny and contrived, so avoid tracks like Gimme Some and She Rides The Pony at all costs.

Lyrical King

T La Rock will probably never get his due credit for influencing generations of rappers right up through today. The elder brother of Special K from Treacherous Three, he was Def Jam's first artist to release music on the label. The Rick Rubin produced It's Yours stands as a landmark sonic achievement production wise and lyrically, which even Russell Simmons admits had a huge influence on LL Cool J, the 2nd artist Def Jam put out.

But T La Rock is so much more than just It's Yours - listen to the sinisterLyrical King [From the Boogie Down Bronx], Breaking Bells, Breakdown, He's Incredible, and Bust These Lyrics to hear confidence, bragadoccio, and Rolex-like timing. The only knock I really have against this compilation is the beats can begin to sound repetitive or show their age on a few tracks, but for the most part, everything works well as a cohesive unit.

You may recognize his beatboxer as well - it's non other than Greg Nice from Nice N Smooth, who kills his solo track Three Minutes of Beatbox as well as Having Fun. You can see some of the styles on display here that would influence Rahzel from the Roots on some of his classic beatbox routines.

If you like stripped down, sparse 80's drum heavy beats and absolutely murderous lyrics, then I recommend you check this out.

If you like never ending punchlines that still make you say damn 18 years later, then this album is for you. If you want to hear a hungry AG go toe to toe with Finesse and more than hold his own, this album is for you (rumor has it AG was the only one to come close to defeating Finesse in battles back in the day). Cold Chillin' in the Blogosphere

In addition to an incredible fashion sense (just peep the above cover for pre-Kanye flash minus the homosexuality), DJ Jazzy Jay is an unheralded name in rap history (at least in today's current market). When you think of Def Jam, you think of Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin - however, Jazzy Jay was a founding member of the infamous label. As a member of the Zulu Nation, he co-produced Planet Rock and released It's Yours by T La Rock (I've read that people credit him with the production, but Rick Rubin is listed in the album as being the beatsmith), the first official Def Jam release. He produced Busy Bee's Runnin' Thangs and started his own label, Strong City Records, which put out the Master's Of Ceremony album.

In addition, he recorded some of the first music ever made by artists like A Tribe Called Quest, Fat Joe, Brand Nubian, and Diamond D at Jazzy Jay's Studio. This is also the place where Cold Chillin' In The Studio was created - they just don't make compilation album like this anymore.

To say that anyone on this album went on to become famous and have a lucrative career in rap would be an overstatement - the closest would be Ultimate Force's Diamond D, who along with Master Rob, set off the opening track I'm Not Playing with a filthy guitar riff. Some other highlights include the hard as fuck The Joke Is Over by Outlaw Gangster, the funky I'm The King by Raheem, the headnodding "Didn't I hear DJ Quik use that sample?" So Def Am I by D-Ice, and just plain fucking awesome You Gotta Believe by Def Duo.

You can play a game while listening to this called "How many samples were used on this album before they became staples in rap". Remember, this was released in 1989, and it sounds as great today as it did back then.

I'm Runnin' Things

Continuing with my theme of early-mid 80's artists, here is Busy Bee's album Runnin' Thangs from 1988, which is surprising since he had been rhyming for over 8 years at that point. Again, if you love funky beats (all produced by the legendary DJ Jazzy Jay), fun lyrics, and styles by the gram, this is for you. Listen to one time club bangers Suicide and Express and just nod along and tap your feet. His ode to Converse didn't gain him the fame of Run DMC's My Adidas, but seems revolutionary when you listen to it in comparison to the footwear songs released today.

If you are under the age of 28, you might only recognize Busy Bee from his turn in the movie Paid In Full (and Wildstyle for the older heads), but this guy has more than put in his dues over the years, including winning the New Music Seminar's MC World Supremacy Belt, and getting infamously destroyed by Kool Moe Dee in a 1981 battle. Back when battles meant something, this was one of the most vicious ones in recorded history.
