New Jersey Underground Parts 9 And 10 (1989-1999)

My New Jersey series has taken a backseat for awhile now. There are some bangers here I had forgotten about. Some of the more obscure selections are probably Two Weary Travelers, The Outz and Corrupt Empire. 'Get High' is from a 'Priority Records Sampler' tape. Posting these compilations makes me remember tons of classic tracks that have slipped from my mind. These lineups will keep you coming back..

I'm pretty sure I got all the cities/years right, but if not let me know. Hollow Point is from New York apparently I think but Corrupt Empire is from New Jersey. More than anything, I am trying to capture the sound of a particular state when I do these regional compilations. I know there are probably things mislabeled here, but I'm hoping y'all will forgive me. Leave some thoughts, tell me what's new to you and what you've heard. Apache - R.I.P. Jan.22.10

Paying my tribute to one of the original Flavor Unit crew member, Apache, I compiled all of his appearances on records from 1989 to 1993 and the 12" cuts from his 1993 solo album "Apache Ain't Shit". Starting out with Lakim Shabazz on 45 King's Rhythmical Madness in 1989. Following with four appearances on the Flavor Unit album in 1990. In 1991, he's on Naughty By Nature & Double J's album. In 1993, for his 12"s cuts, he receives production from A Tribe Called Quest(Q. Tip), Large Professor, and The 45 King. For his guest appearances in 1993, he's with Fat Joe & Kool G Rap, and 2Pac(R.I.P), Treach, & The Live Squad(Stretch R.I.P). He would also write some of Latifah's lyrics. Apache had an incredible music collection.

Here we have The Lost Breakbeats: The Album by DJ Mark The 45 King released in 1993. This is a rare record to own. I've seen other breakbeats 12" by 45 King but never this one, I was surprised when I found it at my local record shop. There's also some vocals from original Flavor Unit member "Double J". Enjoy,

Latee Compilation

Latee is the most gifted MC to ever come out of the Flavor Unit, but unfortunately, he never released a full-length LP. In late 2008, a Latee demo tape surfaced on ebay, and it ended up selling for $100. Needless to say, after hearing the mp3 snippets, the demos shot up to the very top of my want list. Make sure to check the divshare audio samples for the "$100 Auction Demo Tape" mp3.

I originally put this compilation together about a year ago, but since then, I added a Tim Westwood freestyle that was recently uploaded by one of our many great posters in the TROY Forum (click the link for the precise thread, props to thewool). I also discovered that there was an alternate version of "Latee Rocks Da Bells", and of course, I added the $100 demo snippets. If you have anything to add, please hit us up in the comments section.

Here's a blog from King Sun on his Myspace about the diss:

"Ok, I was the first to respond with a dis record towards Tupac when he first dissed Tribe Called Quest at the Source Awards in '94. Since Tupac appeared on "California" wit Dre, I felt the need to respond wit "Califony" and derived the hook from the Die Hard movie when Bruce Willis was a cop from NY and had beef in Cali. Every time he killed an adversary his reply was "Yippie Kay Ya Mother Fucker."

The beat was produced by DJ Mark the 45 King and was cut up by Funk Master Flex in D&D Studios in Midtown Manhattan. Shout outs to Doug and Dave. I then allowed Doo Wop to put the song on his mixtape to generate a buzz. Tupac and I discussed the dis song after having Ice-T play it for Pac. We laughed together over the phone and Pac new it was nothing personal, but I had to rep NY to the fullest. Shout outs to Ice-T, who's like my older cousin from the Left Coast who has always held me down, to WC Crazy Toons, DJ Aladdin, DJ Pooh, Evil E and Hen G and Shawny Shawn.

Rest in peace Pac. Our love goes out to Mrs. Shakur. Tell BIG I said "Hold some equality for me and Lady Heron and be at the door with Jesus so we can get in!"

Doo Wop played his record with King Sun on his critically acclaimed Summer Jam '96 mixtape. Doo Wop also goes at 2Pac & The Dogg Pound at the end of the tape. Notice how the mixtape only features East Coast artists. This was around the time of Hit' Em Up. According to DJ King Shammek, King Sun had also recorded another diss record titled "Don't Know How To A.C.T." directed at Westside Connection

DJ Mark The 45 King is one of the more celebrated producers at the T.R.O.Y. Forum and throughout the blogosphere; his production credits, break beat compilations, and mixtapes are the stuff of legend. Forum regular and occasional contributor to out blog Jaz (of CDRS fame) was kind enough to bless us with this treat. Apparently this is an LP entirely produced by 45 King, which Jaz says is a "promo that was manufactured by Def Jam Records, Inc., and marketed by Roc-A-Fella Records L.L.C./ Def Jam Records." Ho1ogramz noted that the existence of this LP was mentioned during Unkut's interview with 45 King:

Robbie: I got this bootleg a while ago - the Put The Funk Out There album. What was the story behind that?

The 45 King: I have my ideas who put that out, but I had nothing to do with that. It’s funny that people like to bootleg me but they don’t wanna put the record out. So I dunno how that goes.

Robbie: Was that actually how you planned the album or was that just a collection of tracks that someone just put together?

The 45 King: Considering what the tracks were, that’s why I have a feeling who did it. It was an album that was supposed to come out that never came out.

Yes indeed ... I Am in its commercially released form is an abomination, the malformed product of a nauseating marriage of greed and cynicism on both the artistic and business end, and it ushered in Nas' decade-long descent into obsolescence. Vaporized took it upon himself to replace the overproduced mediocrity of the commercial release with some choice minimalist beats from Godfather Don and 45 King. Needless to say, the final product is superior to the poorly aged P.O.S. that was the commercially released version, and as resident yachtsman Drizzle suggests:

"putting shit like nas is like and you won't see me over dark minimal godfather don beats gives a whole new shape/direction to the song and in some parts a completely different context to the lyrics."
