The Midwest Lineup 1989-2005

Steppin' to the plate today we have a bunch of hard hitters out of the bread belt. I am bringing you volumes 3-5 in my midwest series First to bat is number three which is the only one of 21 volumes with a few tracks that came out in 2000 or later. Beginning at volume 4, the rest of them are strictly 90's selections. If you need the 1st two volumes these are the links:

http://philaflava.blogspot.com/2009/05/midwest-starting-line.html

http://philaflava.blogspot.com/2009/12/midwest-series-volume-2-1989-1997.html

Volume 3 --

One of my favorite cuts here is definitely 'Phantoms Of The Opera'. I know this classic banger has been heard around the way for years and I had to include it here. Essential underground vs the industry type rap. I can't get enough of the beat on 'Two Trains'. Maybe the sound is not your thing but it's played around here all the time. Also check out the beat on 'In Sync'. If anyone wants to hear it I'd be glad to post the full 'Weightless Recordings Battle Raps & Freestyles' release one of these days. Track 6 is one the nicest cuts from that collective. Here's a link and the tracklist.

http://sharebee.com/a35576a2

01 (5:17) Kanser - Love In Your Face (Minnesota 1998)
02 (3:16) Kankick - Live As It Gets (Ft. Medaphor) (2001)

16 (8:20) Organic Mind Unit - (Bonus Track) Hard......Complicated (Minnesota 1997)

Volume 4 --

Kinda on the gangsta tip this time. Playya 1000 is the kind of sound that makes me crank the system. Maybe it's the drawl, maybe it's the infectious beat. Whatever, turn it up. Another one of my favorite tracks is number 6. K-Stone was a veteran of the Detroit Scene. If anyone out there can provide us a comprehensive disograpny of his work that would be dope. I know he had at least 5 releases I can think of. Next up is that timeless midwest anthem from D 2 Tha S. 'Dissin these fools'. Cold blooded lyrics, a moody beat, what more do you need ? If you like that old school delivery don't sleep on Awesome Dre and The J To The D. Here's a link and the tracklist.

http://sharebee.com/b2ee401d

01 (4:52) Big Bur-na - Addikted To Da Streetz (Tulsa 1995)
02 (5:17) Devious Steve - Where I Stay (Indiana 1994)
03 (3:58) Playya 1000 - Foe Da Mil Ticket (Tulsa 1992)
04 (5:16) 16 Keys - Murder One (1994)
05 (3:57) Menace To Society - Menace Niggaz (Michigan 1993)
06 (4:08) K-Stone - Niggas From Detroit (1994)
07 (4:57) D 2 Tha S & Toxic (Of The Chamba) - Dissin These Fools (Chicago 1995)
08 (2:50) Romeo Ryonell - Iskyspook (Kansas City 1994)
09 (3:59) Blu (Of Criminal Division) - I Rush Niggas (Michigan 1993)
10 (4:02) Swolts - Casanova 1973 (Chicago 1996)
11 (4:10) Thawfor - Dagger Of The Mind (Chicago 1995)
12 (5:02) Chill Will - In The Park After Dark (Chicago 1995)
13 (3:58) Insane Rhyme Slangaz - Side Effects (Flint 1995)
14 (5:36) Awesome Dre - Deadlier Than Strichnine (Detroit 1993)
15 (5:14) The J To The D - Fuck That (Detroit 1991)

Volume 5 --

Volume 5 is one the volumes I like most of all 21 midwest compilations I've put together. The remix for 'Suicide' is dope as hell. I'm not really a fan of Twista but this track is tight. Another standout is 'Detroit Madness'. This is probably the best thing on his album. To be honest Daddy Hill can't rap his way out of a paper bag but the cheesy beat and female background vocals have me hooked like crack. Make sure to listen up when 'Streetwise' comes on. This is one of the doper selections from 'The Hidden Talent Disk'. The album is a bit 'mixed' and unfortunately lives up to it's name on a few songs. Sometimes I like to rescue good cuts from the sea of mediocrity by which they are surrounded so I don't forget about them. Here's a link and the tracklist.

http://sharebee.com/98741df9

01 (1:26) Twista - Suicide Remix (Chicago 1992)
02 (1:18) Capital D & The Molemen - Midnight (Chicago 1999)
03 (5:12) The Ill State Assassins - Hardcore Crew (Chicago 1995)
04 (3:31) B.O.E. - Black On Earth (1995)
05 (3:14) M.F. 911 - Shots Cold Gunnin' (Detroit 1993)
06 (4:37) Daddy Hill - Detroit Madness (1997)
07 (3:40) Six Pak - Living Nightmare (Chicago 1995)
08 (4:08) Da Flint Connection - Death B-4 Dishonesty (1994)
09 (3:48) Nettwork - Walkin' Thru The Graveyard (Flint 1994)
10 (3:33) Awol - Trilogy (Detroit 1993)
11 (6:06) The Speedknot Mobstaz - One Shot One Kill (Chicago 1995)
12 (8:20) Hynpnotic The Native Sun - Kallsiti 3K (Minnesota 1998)
13 (1:46) Magnetic Personalities - Insectacide Prelude To A Dark (Minnesota 1995)
14 (3:55) B-Movie Fiendz - Streetwise (With Mic One & Thawfor) (Chicago 1997)

16 (3:51) Shade Luv X - Local (Minneapolis 1993)
17 (4:01) H.M.H. - Yo Play Radio Joint (Michigan 1994)
18 (3:00) Esham - Some Old Wicket Shit!!! (Detroit 1990)

There's a fair amount of music here. I'm sure some of these groups are familiar to you already, I'm hoping a few will you'll be playing for the first time. Leave some comments, let me know which cities you're interested in and who you want to hear more from.

For those who missed it, I posted volumes 6-9 here:

Thanks for listening, enjoy!

It's been freezing lately, the roads are sketchy, my pipes are frozen. brr! Somehow I cant help thinking about how nice it must be down there on the south coast. Corpus Christi would do the trick right now. To fight off the cold I'm bringing you more dope shit out of the south today, 1991-1999. Black Saturday is off the hook every time. One of these days soon I'll post the whole ep. You need to hear it if you haven't yet. Favorite tracks for me here are numbers 1, 4, and 8. Like the past volumes, this compilation showcases the breadth and depth of southern hip hop. I hope y'all dig this. Here's a link and the tracklist --

Ok Boston locals, give me the lowdown. What are the best spots for picking up (used) vinyl ? I'm out here on the west coast but next time I make it back that way I want to know where to hunt. More than anything, I am trying to capture the sound of a particular state when I do these regional compilations. I know there are probably things mislabeled here, but I'm hoping y'all will forgive me. Leave some thoughts, tell me what's new to you and what you've heard. I love putting these 'Garden State' collections together. Thanks for reading. Jersey stand up!

This compilation is on a more mellow vibe than the east coast 12 inch volumes preceding it. I like the change of pace and I hope you do too. Favorite cuts here are numbers 2, 8 and 9. A couple geographical mistakes are generally par for the course. For instance, I think Saukrates is from Canada and Zombie Squad is a european crew. Don't quote me on that though.

01 (4:50) Frankenstein - Frankenstein's Pain (1993)
02 (4:00) Ill Mentality - Lovin U4 Dayz (Qbc Remix) (1994)
03 (4:56) Saukrates - Hate Runs Deep (Dirty Mix) (1995)
04 (4:21) The Prosecution - Shady (1994)
05 (2:58) Slum Brothers - Six Million MC's (Clean) (1995)
06 (3:24) Hurricane - Comin Off (Central Coast Vibe) (1995)
07 (2:42) Heltah Skeltah - Place to Be (Clean) (1996)
08 (4:03) Akinyele & Sadat X - Loud Hangover (Dirty Mix) (1995)
09 (3:59) Redman - Blow Your Mind (LP Version) (1992)
10 (3:55) Da Dysfunkshunal Familee - New Ruff Flava (remix) (1994)
11 (3:41) Money Boss Players - Ghetto Chronicle Daily (1994)
12 (3:48) Zombie Squad - The Truth (1995)
13 (4:29) Misunderstood - One To One (Street Mix) (1995)
14 (2:50) Brooklyn Zoo - Original Brooklyn Zoo (Street Mix) (1994)
15 (5:01) Onyx - Walk In New York (Main) (1995)
16 (4:14) The Umc's - Time To Set It Straight (LP Version) (1993)
17 (4:35) Jemini The Gifted One - Brooklyn Kids (Straight Version) (1995)

Download

I have 125 volumes in my 'east coast 12 inch' series and it'll take me awhile to get through them. If you like these collections let me know and I'll start posting them more often, maybe several at a time. In the meantime, enjoy volume 6!

Universal Beats 1990-2001

Dope production is not limited to any one area as these compilations show. Yes production styles change from region to region but an ear for music is something anyone can appreciate, regardless of where they're from. I had been thinking about instrumentals after I put together a mostly east coast break beats compilation sometime last winter. Here is a link and the tracklist to that one.

mostly east coast breakbeats--

New Jersey Underground Part 8

Comin' at ya today with volume 8 from my New Jersey series. Getting off to a fresh start we have one of the best cuts on the Double X Posse album from 1995. I know I might get some flack for this but I actually prefer that one to their 1992 album. As often happens, a few tracks featured here are from different places other than New Jersey. I always find this stuff out later. For example I put this compilation together on 11/3/2007, but it was not until last year sometime that I found some of the locations are wrong. Oh well, hope y'all will forgive me. I swear, the person who makes a comprehensive encyclopedia of where hip hop artists are from is going to strike it rich. I for one would be hitting up a site like that constantly. Favorite tracks on volume 8 include numbers 1, 2 and 8. Here's a link and the tracklist --

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=2H5PIGI0

01 (4:47) Double X - Wreckin it [Jersey City 1995]

03 (2:25) The 45 King - Here I Go [Jersey City 1993] (Who is the mc ?)
04 (3:56) Redman - Blow Your Mind [Newark 1992]
05 (3:35) Raw Breed - Let The Dogs Loose [New York, woops 1993]
06 (4:37) Troubleneck Brothers - Fuck All Ya'll [New York, woops 1992]
07 (3:12) Naughty By Nature - Connections [Newark 1995]
08 (4:54) Black Prince And Aziatic Roger - Fuck The World [Trenton 1992]
09 (4:33) Black Caesar - The Symptoms [Jersey City 1995]
10 (3:59) Just Shawn - Just For A Look [Newark 1996]
11 (5:02) Lords Of The Underground - Lunatic Asylum [Newark 1995]
12 (3:53) Fierce - Come Close [East Orange 1996]
13 (4:13) Organized Konfusion - Bring It On [New York, woops 1996]
14 (4:04) Scott Lark Da Sensei - It Aint Goin Down {Trenton 1996]
15 (3:06) Young Zee - Jack Mode [Newark 1996]
16 (4:54) Chino Xl - Rappaz Are In Danger [Newark 1996]
17 (3:58) E. Bros - Toast [Chicago or something.. 1995]
18 (3:18) D1 - Fakes [Newark 1994]
19 (4:32) F.o.a. - I Keep A Muthf--ka Swoll [trenton 1992]

Let me know what you like. If you see mistakes in the locations feel free to correct them but do not miss out on hearing the other cuts because something is mislabeled. I hope y'all dig what you hear.

Various Artists Cd - 'Balance' (Philadelphia 1999)

This is a somewhat obscure ep from 1999. Not sure how many of the tracks are exclusives but it's a nice lineup. It was co-produced by Cas and Omne, who had his hands in a number of other mid/late 90's philly releases. I really dig the 2nd cut 'the meanin' and 'so rich' by Ryan Banks. I have no idea if Ryan Banks did anything else, the track has grown on me. Also of interest are the 2 tracks by P.H.A., aka 'Power Hittin' Artist'. I became aware of him when Al at Crates Of Ag posted his 1st two singles. For those who slept, you can check them here --

http://alkuttraz.blogspot.com/2006/11/power-hittin-artist.html

Alkuttraz I hope you're reading man, this is some later material I hope is new to you. Here's a link for this cd --

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=BUS8YTK7

1. (:37) cas - intro
2. (3:38) ag, kamachi & dj revolution - the meanin' (they don't know)
3. (3:52) power hittin' artist - walk the route
4. (3:28) kamachi - copperfield
5. (3:38) maylay sparks, kamachi & dj jay-ski - unusual styles
6. (:19) cas - interlude
7. (3:34) ryan banks - so rich
8. (2:44) power hittin' artist - beats and rhymes
9. (4:12) last emperor, kamachi & dj jay-ski - nile nutrition

The weak link in the chain is number nine, but at least it's last. Altogether this is a head nodding compilation that's not well known but entirely worth having. Buy the cd if you can find it, I picked mine up for 3 bucks. Enjoy!

Midwest Series Volume 2 (1989-1997)

Better late than never right ? It's been a long time since I posted any of my midwest compilations. No time like the present, seize the day. Seize the music that is. This mix is fairly varied. Cuts like 'Skanless' or 'Two To The Chest' are pretty gangsta, but there's some dope true school hip hop here as well. This 2nd volume inevitably makes me crank up my system. Drive your neighbors insane. If you like that midwest sound you'll be coming back again and again.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=HEZS368E

01 (1:13) Awesome Dre - Intro (Detroit 1989)
02 (4:00) Villain - Skanless (Chicago 1994)
03 (4:38) Da Flint Connection - Two To The Chest (Flint 1994)
04 (4:34) D 2 Tha S (Dedicated 2 Tha Streets) - Doomsday (Chicago 1993)
05 (4:31) Beastside Crew - Mind Over Matter (Detroit 1994)
06 (4:45) Schoolly D - Ghettofunkstylistic (Philadelphia 1995)
07 (4:41) Aduo And B.O.T. Incorporated - Hip Knockin (Flint 1993)
08 (3:34) Awol - Detroit 4 Life (Detroit 1994)
09 (4:17) B Movie Fiendz (Feat. Anthony Dee La Rock) - Juggernaught (Chicago 1997)
10 (3:45) Mood - Cincinnati (Cincinatti 1997)
11 (3:34) Ministerz Of A Sinister Society - Fully Automatic (Flint 1995)
12 (3:15) Tha Chamba - Tha Siclic (Chicago 1995)
13 (5:19) Ec Illa - Mating Ritual (Chicago 1995)
14 (4:57) N4REDD - On 'Da' Grind (Ohio 199?)
15 (4:20) Jack Frost & BANME - You Don't Like How I'm Livin (Chicago 1992)
16 (3:32) Alps Cru - All Alone (1996)
17 (3:11) Shade Luv X - Dont Test (St Paul Mn 1993)
18 (0:15) Shade Luv X - If I See A Knife Or A Gun (St Paul Mn 1993)

You might be asking yourself why a Schoolly track is on this mix. Because it's gutter and it fit well, that's why. I hope y'all dig the selection. Tell me what you like!

Shoveling Out The New York Crates - Phase 4

Recently Verge started a thread on the t.r.o.y. forum strictly for eps. It reminded me that my ep sampler series has gone by the wayside for awhile now. Here's volume 4 from the New York ep collections. There are 8 volumes more to come so check back. Look closely and you'll see some pretty rare material on this compilation. Tracks 1 and 4 are not from eps but they fit right in.

01 (3:53) Freestyle Professors - Rap Mathematician (1994?)
02 (4:40) Gunrunners - Shakedown 1995

04 (4:03) Ra Capone - Down With The Black Mob 1995
05 (3:20) Rakim - I Get Visual 1996
06 (4:09) Prose (Steady And Efeks) - One People 199?

18 (4:24) Pete Rock and CL Smooth - In The House 1994
19 (4:12) Dysfunkshunal Familee - To Have Or Have Not 1994
20 (3:49) Lace Da Booms - Ain't No Secret (Clean) 1997

I tried to stick with a relatively narrow time range, 1994-1997. The number of dope eps from just these three years alone is incalculable. Let me know what you like, I'll be glad to share any of the full eps these tracks are pulled from. Enjoy volume 4 in the meantime!

Edit: Apparently the .rar file was missing track 11. Here is another link with that cut included.

Philly Retrospective Volume 8

Bringing you volume 8 from my Philadelphia series today. Like the previous ones, this edition has some relatively obscure and very dope cuts. Starting things off strong is 'East Wild West' by Rahsheed. I scored this single for about 3 bucks from a local shop. Favorites are probably numbers 3-5, but the rest are bangers too. East Coast 12 Inch Rarities Volume 4 And 5

I have not posted any of my east coast 12 inch compilations in ages so I thought I'd include a couple this time. Today we have volumes 4 and 5. Most of the material is dark gritty stuff, perfect for Halloween. As sometimes happens there are a couple geographical mistakes here and there. I always find out about them later. Nonetheless I hope these two compilations get some time in your system.

Chicago vs Detroit, 1993-1995. This compilation is some slammin boom bap shit. I'd try to name favorite tracks but I like them all. For you midwest collectors, check out T. Green. I believe this is another one of K-Stone's projects. I hope everyone digs this, I have been playing it repeatedly for days now.

Hen - The Underworld (Atlanta 1994)

This an unsung classic out of Atlanta, Georgia. It's pretty rare, I have seen it selling in the 100 dollar range on ebay. My favorite track is probably number 7. Hen is not some playalistic shit like Outkast, or booty shakin' garbage like 2 Live Crew. Hen dances to the beat of a different drummer. This album is gritty, funky, infectious. I hope you like it as much as I do.

Latin Groove

By now you've known us long enough to know our tastes run much wider than just hip hop. Todays post is one such change of pace. What I have here today is a head-noddin' collection of latin funk from the late 60's to 2003. No, this ain't your fathers favorite Carlos Montoya lp. Like jazz and hip hop, funk is informed by many styles. Cultural influences in funk music are numerous and distinct. The latin take is no different. I love all sorts of latin music, from peruvian flutes, to classic flamenco guitar to the earth shaking james of Carlos Santana. If you're a sucker for that south-of-the-border flavor then check this out. My favorite tracks are probably numbers 3,11 and 14.

Here's a link and the tracklist --

Download

01 (5:00) Ry Cooder And Manuel Galban - Drume Negrita
02 (3:29) Marc Ribot - Chingatanero No Se
03 (4:28) Pucho & His Latin Soul Brothers - Heat!
04 (3:01) Willie Bobo - Fried Neck Bones And Some Home Fries
05 (3:58) Tommy Guerrero - Color Of Life
06 (3:53) David Byrne - Beleza Tropical
07 (3:28) Banda Black Rio - Rio De Fevereiro
08 (3:35) Airto - Alue
09 (3:30) Ocho - Undress My Mind
10 (5:57) Sergio Mendes And Brasil '77 - Superstition
11 (5:21) Ricardo Marrero - Babalonia
12 (8:40) Sambo Soul - Mambo #5
13 (3:23) Soul Bossa Trio - Sally
14 (6:33) The Herbaliser - Latin Horns

This last tune is something I cut from a live show The Herbaliser did in New York City in 2000 I think. If anyone out there knows the lp they were playing I'd really like to know! Enjoy.
