Philly Retrospective Volume 8

Bringing you volume 8 from my Philadelphia series today. Like the previous ones, this edition has some relatively obscure and very dope cuts. Starting things off strong is 'East Wild West' by Rahsheed. I scored this single for about 3 bucks from a local shop. Favorites are probably numbers 3-5, but the rest are bangers too. I cheated a little bit with the Pittsburgh tracks, hope you like them.

Philly Retrospective Volume 7

Hittin' ya with volume 7 of the Philly retrospective series today. There are some underground gems here for you phanatics. Starting off is a classic banger by Lux. As far as I know this was his first official tape. If he did something else earlier than 1994 I'd love to know. Next up is a dark, haunting tune by Tainted Mindz. I'm assuming most of our readers are familiar with the two releases they put out, 'Killadelphia' and 'All In The Flip.' If not, let me know and i'll up them soon. Other favorites on volume 7 include tracks 7,8 and 11. One of these days I'll post The Kartel album if anyone out there wants to hear it. Philadelphia is an endless gold mine for diggers and this compilation delivers in spades.

Philly Retrospective Volume 6

Today I am bringing you the 6th mix in the Philadelphia series. I was driving around in the car today cause I can't get enough of this one. Burn it to cd and put it in your ride. You'll see why. Track 1 is a serious banger! The beat has been used elsewhere, but the effect is magnified by Schoolly's voice. Some of these tracks are pretty obscure so if you are into philly stuff turn off the snooze button and roll out of bed. For those rarified vinyl collector fiends, check out Legion Of Doom in particular. Don't stop there though cause this whole mix is packed.

philly retrospective volumes 2 and 3

As promised, here are the next couple installments in my Philadelphia compilations series. Both of these have some pretty rare material on them. The track by F-Mob on volume 2 was something i heard on a radio show in Olympia, Washington back in 1993. Their album 'Once In A Blue Moon' was mostly instrumental/acid jazz. 'Pump Pump' was one of the only hip hop tracks on the album. It also came out as a 12" single, for good reason. The track is a burner. Check the beat!

Philly Retrospective Volume 1

Hip hop in Philadelphia has a long and deep history. It was one of the 1st areas outside of New York to produce recorded hip hop. Checking ebay listings usually reveals a small number of Philadelphia releases at high prices. The city does get a fair amount of recognition and there are lots of Philadelphia artists who have made their way onto the national scene. Closer examination and constant research reveals a very prolific underground there. Many of the artists I'm going to feature in this 23-volume series were hardly heard or known about outside the city limits. This 1st volume is comprised of artists who are probably familiar for the most part, but stay tuned. Over a period of time, I will post 22 other Philadelphia compilations made up of the rarest/dopest gems I could find. You're in for some surprises, so stay tuned!
