Mr. Philaflava, Jason Gloss, began exploring the concept of weekly request threads around the time the T.R.O.Y. blog started up, creating the first eight threads. That then switched to Jaz at the start of last year who held it down through the twenty first one (with Verge actually creating the twentieth one). Since then Odnet has been runnin' things. I couldn't even begin to list all the contributors.

Start checkin' it out when you have the time, there's no way that you won't find something that you both enjoy and haven't heard before. Stop by and ask for the impossible (I know I have and it's actually worked for me more than once) or try to help out if you think you can contribute. You'll be surprised by what you can find.

Superegular & The Stoupe Produced EPs of the '90s.

It’s time for some more literal Phila flava. Before Stoupe the Enemy of the Mankind began to work almost exclusively for members of Jedi Mind Tricks and Army of the Pharaohs (with exceptions for artists like Canibus, Guru and Reks) he was starting out with groups like Soulcraft, Doublespeek and Neso in the mid to late nineties.

“…I had a very brief career as an MC. Stoupe and I had a group called Doublespeek with another friend. We put out one 12” in 1996 just before the birth of Superegular. I think it went copper? I never saw the final SoundScan numbers on that one.” ~ Ryan Donahue (in a Baby Grande Interview)

This is that one 12”, which, if you can find, will now likely cost you a couple bills. But now thanks to the Illest EPs thread (among other places), you can hear it right here:

Yo, which one o' y'all down wit' B.B.O.?

One of the many gems posted in T.R.O.Y.'s Illest EPs Ever thread is from this little known group:

Best Ballers Out, or B.B.O., also known as The B.B.O. Crew, B.B.O. Enterprises or B.B.O. Niggas were a Harlem based group composed of (then Murda) Mase’s brother Blinky Blink (who would later be known from Harlem World), Napizm, White Bread, Beef Tha Thief, Futuristic and manager Chuck Black. (Real names according to the credits on their EP: T. Gilford, M. Foster, K. Leigh, G. Jones, G. Burgess and T. Saunders.) They had ties to DJ S&S, the Niggaz For Life crew and The Children of the Corn(er), first getting shout outs from the likes of Mase and Big L starting around ’93, their song from ’96 Get Rude may have been inspired by Mase’s ’93 track of the same name (V2 / VBR). Sometime starting around ’97, shortly before the group disappeared, they had ads up in The Source promoting what would have been their debut album: Across From 125^th St., which of course never dropped. By the end of ’98 they had basically all but vanished completely.

“This is like the Amerikkka’s Most Wanted of the New York ghetto. Probably one of the most gangsta albums in sound that we’ve heard… the fact that this came out in 1991 simply shows its brilliance further.” Chris Aylen – Spine Magazine

In 1989, an nineteen year old MC from Newburgh, NY named J Rock was discovered by independent label owner Jeff Murphy. Shortly thereafter, the two would collaborate, along with upstart producers DJ Premier & Easy Mo Bee to produce a memorable album called Streetwize. Actually, J Rock had released a 12” single entitled The Chosen One prior to releasing Streetwize in early 1990 on Murphy’s Ghetto Groovz Label. Moderately received by the hip hop community, it got some airplay on various hip hop and college radio stations. After the single, J Rock knew he needed to improve his skills, so he put together a homemade studio and went to work. “The Chosen One was a wake up call, it showed me that I was not ready and that I had to work on my skills” recalled J Rock. “I had to prove to Jeff that I was ready to put in the time and commitment that it would take to make it work.”

While working on his lyrical skills, J Rock also discovered that he had talent producing tracks. “After we did The Chosen One, Jeff got Premier and Mo Bee to do some tracks for me and the other artists he had on the label. While we were in the studio, I watched Premier and I learned from him how to put together tracks.” J Rock took what he learned into the studio and put together a demo that he eventually sent in to The Source Magazine. He was featured in the Unsigned Hype column of the December 1990 issue. It stated that “this is the type of shit you’d hear at a battle in a playground and this is the type of MC that might walk away with the belt”. After the feature, Murphy and J Rock along with DJ Big Chris went back into the studio to complete the album.

The eighteen track album contained tales of daily life in the ghetto and ultimately became a critical success, receiving many positive reviews, including a glowing review in The Bomb Hip Hop newsletter in which it was given four stars. Two videos, Save the Children and Neighborhood Drug Dealer were produced for the album. They were shown on Yo! MTV Raps and other rap video shows. The album has become a collectors item, with people paying top dollar for an original copy. The lasting appeal of Streetwize showed itself again in July 2006 when a story about the album appeared in Wax Poetics. J Rock explains the continued interest, “I think that real hip hop heads know what time it is, they know what’s good and what’s not and they appreciate Streetwize for what it is, real hardcore simplistic hip hop, you don’t hear this kinda stuff anymore."

01. Recorded October 8th, 1998 for the Fat Beats Amsterdam Party (with Andre the Giant and Roc Raida on stage as well).
02. The first song L ever recorded. When he was seventeen, 1992. Unreleased (because Finesse wasn’t allowed to put anyone on who wasn’t signed to a label) until it was put it on From the Crates to the Files in 2003.
03. The first solo song L ever recorded, also in 1992, before Devil's Son. The first verse was used on Stretch & Bobbito that year but the rest went unheard until Finesse put it out last year on Rare Selections EP Vol. II.
04. Given to DJs but unreleased tag free (without voiceovers) until last year when Finesse put it out on Rare Selections EP Vol. I. ’91 Finesse remix instrumental beat for Large Pro, unused by Warner Bros., L’s vocals added in ’93 but deemed too outdated for Lifestylez.
05. Unreleased Ron G mix not included on the 2005 Children of the Corn Collector’s Edition CD (features all of The Children of the Corner except Bloodshed).
06. Part of this was used for The Triboro, unheard in it’s entirety until 2005’s The Archives, put out by Finesse.

The original version of Big L's Put It On is just perfect. Sampling Buster Williams version of the Roy Ayers' penned Vibrations gave it a smoothed out, soulful appeal that made it an instant classic.

Years later, I thought more about Put It On and decided that it should have an alternate mix. A darker beat that might match his vocals in a more menacing way was what I wanted to see happen. So, at the time, I had my MPC2000xl for about 2 years and was just really starting to put together half decent tracks.

I sampled Bo Hansson's At The House Of Elrond off of his Music Inspired By Lord Of The Rings album from 1972. From what I can remember, I think I just slowed it down on the turntable and sampled a few different parts and arranged them to my liking through the MPC. Then, I took a not too known drum break, chopped it to pieces, layered some other drums over them and tapped it out on the drum pads.

I originally did this in 2004 and I wanted to recreate this to the best of my ability, so I called on vaporized from the T.R.O.Y. forum for some help. I sent him my beat and the Big L acapella and below you can hear the results. Give it a thorough listen and leave a comment, thanks.

Big Kwam

Big Kwam was one of my favorite underground MC's from the mid-late 90's. I can't say I know a lot about him so please fill me in. What I do know is he was down with The Creators and only released 12" singles via Blind Side Records, a London label. Big Kwam and Big Twan had great chemisty like Tony Bones had Mr. Live, unfortunately most of those cats are now M.I.A.
