Part of the mass appeal of the T.R.O.Y. blog and forum is that we constantly put in work.

Here's a recap of the request threads that've gone on in the T.R.O.Y forum so far: There is an official request thread and then there’s the weekly threads, so if you've been missin' out, you might want to review the last more than a year's worth of weekly request threads (whether to dig for rare and exclusive gems or to remind you of everything else you are still looking for):

Mr. Philaflava, Jason Gloss, began exploring the concept of weekly request threads around the time the T.R.O.Y. blog started up, creating the first eight threads. That then switched to Jaz at the start of last year who held it down through the twenty first one (with Verge actually creating the twentieth one). Since then Odnet has been runnin' things. I couldn't even begin to list all the contributors.

Start checkin' it out when you have the time, there's no way that you won't find something that you both enjoy and haven't heard before. Stop by and ask for the impossible (I know I have and it's actually worked for me more than once) or try to help out if you think you can contribute. You'll be surprised by what you can find.

Shadz Of Lingo - A View To A Kill

Atlanta’s Shadz Of Lingo first debuted on Erick Sermon’s debut solo album No Pressure on the track "Lil Crazy" back in 1993,DJ Rocco and MC’s Kolorado and Lingo first met in 1986 at a Richmond, VA, High School.

In 1991 they all moved to Atlanta and began recording, A View To A Kill, released in 1994 was their only album that had a line up of dope producers behind the boards, Erick Sermon produced and appeared on "Mad Flavaz" (also released as a single) while Diamond D laced the Shadz with four ill tracks, “Ill & Get Clowned” which featured a lovely jazz horn sample, deep bassline and the infamous Skull Snaps drums, “Different Stylez” sampled Sister Nancy’s “Bam Bam” which was made famous by Large Professor for Main Source’s “Just Hanging Out”, “Think I Give A Fuck” with it’s ill Eddie Harris sample and Lou Donaldson drums and “Don’t Test Da Skillz” which sampled ESG’s “UFO” and Jack Bruce’s "Sam Enchanted Dick”,(also used by Showbiz) Diamond D was definitely the production highlight on the album but Madness 4 Real’s “View To A Kill” was dope and had a Cypress Hill vibe and his funk laced "I Step 2 U Den” was good as well.

Dallas Austin produces the hard “Wherez Da Steel?”, which is not bad but his later effort “Always Stylin” is better,
A View To A Kill is not a classic or a lost album, but it’s a great golden age Hip Hop album, that will keep the head nodding and make the listener smile.

Ask and you shall receive

Today we received an email (see below) asking if we had the Knucklehedz track "Headrush," unfortunately I didn't have the cut on hand but I knew where to look. Within a short period of time the request for the track was not only fulfilled but the thread became a flood. Now we definitely aren't the first to blog about this album, but we will do our best to fulfill every request you send us.

Remember the world's greatest forum dedicated to our favorite era is just is a click away. If we don't have an answer for you, we'll get it because T.R.O.Y. is the gift that keeps on giving.

-------

Peace,

Big fan of your site...hoping you can help me out with a lost gem. In 1993, Parrish Smith released these two white kids out of LI called the Knuckelheads. Their a-side ("ALL SHE WANTED") got the most burn, but there was bangin b s-ide ("Headrush")that only saw the light of day on red alerts show back in the day. Ive been searching for the record for over 15 years now. I've asked parrish himself and anyone within the camp for a copy of this record to no avail. Based off your impressive uploads, i have to ask... Would you happen to have this?

Keep up the good work,

Special Ed-Legal

Special Ed-Legal (1990)
Profile

This was young Brooklyn-born Edward Archer’s second album and after the success of The Youngest In Charge (1989), Profile marketed him as some kind of rap heartthrob. Ignore the album cover and go straight to the music. Once again Ed hooked up with the great Hitman Howie Tee who laced Ed with hype tracks for him to get busy to.

Special Ed had one of the smoothest flows in Hip Hop history, check “Come On, Let’s Move It” where he goes to work over a loping Bobby Byrd track or the Salt and Pepa sampling “The Mission” which also sports the banging drums from Billy Squire’s “Big Beat." Ed had skills and could tell great stories -on "The Mission" he rhymes “Picked up the phone, yo who the hell is this? / Somebody said this is serious business."

Ed gets busy over the dope and sparse drums of “I’m Special Ed” and the early Gang Starr sampling “Ya Wish Ya Could," which also flips the infamous Honeydrippers-”Impeach The President” drums and samples Johhny “Guitar” Watson, with Ed boldly stating that all he needs is “just a mic and a track”.

“Ready 2 Attack” samples Rado & Company’s “Where Do I Go” three years before Pete Rock used it for Run DMC’s “Down With The King” and hard hitting Kool and The Gang drums allow Ed to wreck the mic, alongside a Big Daddy Kane vocal sample used for the hook.

“I’m The Magnificent” gets the remix treatment and “Living Like A Star” has Ed attacking a dope beat, while the posse cut "5 Men & A Mic" has Ed sharing mic duties with his brother, his DJ, Aksun, and Little Shawn. Legal was a great follow up album and still sounds dope a good 18 years later.

Class A Felony...

Class A Felony-Class A Felony (1993)
Mercury Recordings

Now here is an album that really fits under the obscure banner, Class A Felony was a New York duo made up of DJ Stitches and the late Edward Dumar Israel aka Lord Dumar, who sadly passed away before the album was released, Class A Felony was their only album and had contributions by great producers like DJ Mark The 45 King (“Hyped Up”, Black Rain”) and Diamond D (“I Can’t Take No More”), which features Lakim Shabazz but oddly no Lord Dumar?.

Class A Felony was a decent album that relied on quirky (peep the warped funk of “Time To Make The Doughnuts”) and familiar samples and fat drum loops, alongside Lord Dumar’s gruff vocal tone which is sometimes reminiscent of King Sun.

The classic Warriors film gets sampled on “Warriors Come Out To Play” and the timeless Bohannon “Save Their Souls”
gets flipped on “I’m No The Herb You’re Lookin’ 4” , James Brown’s “Papa Don’t Take No Mess” gets a workout on the dope “Papa Don’t Play” and a heavy dub sample is used on “Lyrical Bloodbath” while DJ Stitches get his time to display his skills and finesse on the 1's and 2's on “Electricity”.

The hilarious and late comedian Robin Harris is sampled on “I Got A Warrant” and is a great tale of Dumar being on the run,Lord Dumar also runs a sinister tale on “The Night Stalker” and like Guru once said It's mostly the voice and Dumar does indeed have a dope voice and rides beats effortlessly.

I wouldn’t go as far as to call the album a classic, but it’s an ill, lost album that should be heard.

Props to godmc for the hook-up.

The Hill That’s Real...

Various Artists-The Hill That’s Real (1992)

1992 was easily one of the dopest years in Hip Hop history, it was a time of Timberlands, polos, hoodies, and vast amounts of creativity, lyrical skills and fat beats as far as rap music was concerned, it was also the year the infamous Lil Fame (aka Fizzy Womack) of the Mash Out Posse, first recorded to wax on the The Hill That’s Real compilation, an album that celebrated the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, New York.

Lil Fame kicked the album off with the raw ‘Bring The Ruckus’ and also supplied his vocal talents to ’Neighborhood Hood’ and ‘The Hill That’s Real’, as well as appearing on the ‘Crew Full Of Shorties’ cut and overseeing the whole album.

Other key tracks were the ASAP tracks ‘Wrek The Art’ and ‘It’s On You’ with both tracks displaying hardcore jazz loops and fat drums, in fact most of the album is full of deep basslines, hard drums and dope loops supplied by producer Silver D.

Big Ken is a hardcore chick going for hers on ‘4 Star Bitch’ and the sharp tongued ‘All About The Pussy‘, both are dope cuts, but why is she called Big Ken?.

411 (another female) wrecks ‘Exit 21 South’ with adlibs from what sounds like Positive K (I’m not sure if it’s him though) and the album ends with Big Posse’s New York City Drive By’, so in essence, this is a dope album and worth checking for early Lil’ Fame recordings and for those that enjoy rugged Brooklyn Hip Hop. Brrrrrraaaaaappppp
