Inspectah Deck On The Set With 2Pac

Hate him or love him, it cannot be denied that 2Pac was a prolific recording artist. His available catalog of work grows with each passing year and even though it has become difficult to ascertain which songs are legitimate 2Pac recordings and which are the contrivances of DJs and assorted grave robbers, sometimes the detective work and the debate are half the fun.

But what's Wu got to do with all this? Well, recently, Philaflava's denizens discussed a Rebel INS verse that was not included on the album version of 2Pac's "I Got My Mind Made Up." Although most are in agreement that an Inspectah Deck verse was recorded for the song, there are now two mp3s floating around the intarwebz that are claimed to contain the missing verse:

To make matters more complicated, another commenter claims that the actual O.G. version of the song is a Dogg Pound track that features both Deck and Lady of Rage that was handed over to 2Pac sans the aforementioned guest verses, with Deck's adlibs curiously retained. I'm not sure what to make of all this but whatever the case may be, peep the tracks and let us know what you think. --- Thun

Whoa! This is by far the dopest .77 cent cd I have bought in ages! Very underground compilation from New Jersey. Released by Love And Hemp Media Syndicate in 1994. The Orfinz and The Dungeon Boys are the only 2 groups I know of on this release that have other singles.

Classic east coast hip hop, way below the radar. This cd has replay value in spades !

Take the time to drive a few miles east of Mecca, past the quasi-suburban locales of Southeastern Queens cited in the music of LL Cool J and Run DMC and venture off into the wilderness of Strong Island. You will inevitably encounter the heavily Black and Latino hamlets and Census-designated places that Havelock Nelson, Jeff Chang, and other writers have identified as the locus classicus of a new school rap movement that managed to dictate the pace of NYC street culture from a distance.

The Black Belt of Long Island is a Twilight Zone of sorts - not nearly as blighted as NYC's worst ghettoes but a far cry from the picture perfect Levittown idyll of Robert Moses' twisted imagination. A place where the comfort and repose afforded by detached single family housing is counterbalanced by staggering educational disparity. Where a thriving car culture and ample highways provide a temporary from the inequities of "small box" governance. Where park jams and mobile DJ sound systems and mix shows bloomed not long after the seeds drifted over from the five boroughs. A dynamic, fluid collection of zones frequently depicted by its native rap artists as the expansive magical sum of the Island's hopes and disappointments.

Join us on a journey through Strong Island, from Hard 2 Obtain's "12 Block City" (Lakeview) to Keith Murray's dirty stinking corner (Central Islip) to the birthplace of De La's D.A.I.S.Y. consciousness (North Amityville) to the stomping grounds of EPMD and Rakim (Brentwood and Wyanadanche) to every spot mentioned in Original Concept's "Knowledge Me," a hilarious and timelessly ill ode to L.I.'s underappreciated hip-hop pioneers. --- Thun

Setting It Off, Letting It Off, Beginning...

Welcome to the official blog of Philaflava.com's T.R.O.Y. (They Reminisce Over You) forum. "T.R.O.Y." is of course a reference to Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth's ode to their fallen friend (Trouble T-Roy of Heavy D. and The Boyz). If the previous sentence reads like a foreign language to you, don't fret. The purpose of this blog is to explore and celebrate rap music (especially the overlooked and obscure recordings and artists) from about 1987 to 1997, give or take a few years on either end. We are not purists or elitists, just a bunch of proud rap nerds who revel in sharing our discoveries with anyone willing to listen.

Over at the T.R.O.Y. forum we spend most of our work week discussing artists like Scientifik, Godfather Don, K.M.D, Brand Nubian, Mobb Deep, Souls Of Mischief, Avatar the Articulate, Juggaknots, and the like. This daily effort results in the uploading of songs and albums previously unavailable in formats other than dusty vinyl, some of which are long out of print. We frequently take the time to compile songs that share similar themes or moods. Just as the rap culture of the '90s (think Stretch and Bobbito, Sway & Tech and countless college and mixtape DJs) demanded that a class of obsessed aficionados isolate and organize the rawest tracks floating below the radar for our listening pleasure, the Internet age demands similar vigilance.
