My Tapes by Basta aka KYOZAI Pt. 5

You might know Basta (aka Kyozai) as being the owner of the rare cassette blog, Music-Thingz. Recently, he blessed us with a nice portion of his tape collection at philaflava T.R.O.Y. forum.

Here at The T.R.O.Y. blog, we wanted to give these tapes their deserved shine and Basta the proper recognition he's earned, to the people outside of the philaflava forum.

I will split his tapes in several posts, giving you enough time to digest this massive work.

There will be no previews, but c'mon, the hilariously awesome covers alone warrant a download.

Raekwon The Chef “Latest & Greatest Hits [Promo Cassette]” (1995)

I had mentioned in the forum a few days ago that I stumbled across a box of old tapes in my basement. Some mixtapes, some promo samplers, some custom tapes from the days of trading. After posting a short list, it looks like the people have spoken and they want to hear just about all of them. So first up is Raekwon's 1995 promo cassette sampler for the upcoming release of "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx." Nothing mind blowing here, but an exclusive freestyle and (at the time) an advance opportunity to hear a couple album cuts. NOTE: all scans are included in the .rar file as well as a full scan of the sleeve.

J-Love “Nas' Finest” (Cassette)

CLASS-SICK!

This tape is one of those gems that never gets old (even with some J-Love drops on it).
When I first got my hand on a copy of this tape, it really opened up my eyes to the possibility that a lot of artists had material that never made it on albums. And at the time, J-Love seemed to be the one with all the connections as every one of his tapes were covered in exclusives, remixes and unreleased tracks. See scans for track lists and the download contains a full scan of the j-card.

Shouts to Ricky D for sending me a shoe box full of mixtapes many years ago. I'm finally getting around to ripping them.

Touring The States: Omaha, NE

The Basement Society is a collective of emcees whose Hip Hop origin is a direct result of being in "the basement." This crew was a predetermined idea of Omaha emcee, Superior DBX.
After presenting the idea to long time friend and fellow emcee, Jay Money. things started to come together. The crew consisted of DBX (RIP), N-tellect, Jay Money, Kee Lo Z and All Ayz (RIP).

The Basement took the streets by storm after running around challenging anybody who wanted to battle and smashing the competition. They became known for their live performances, which brought them household name status. The Basement's first recording was a song called "Its Over" on 1993's "Parental Advisory" (the first local project release), on which they dissed the Young Rebels, another prominant Omaha crew. After beefin' with the Young Rebels (and a few other crews), Basement Society released their debut ep "Who Downstairs?" in April of 1994, which started out on a successful path. "Who Downstairs?" was probably the most popular project released under the watchful eye of DJ Suicide, at that time, selling all copies out of the store (no hand to hand sales), relying on heavy street promotions and the impact of the live shows to sell the units.

A recording contract was being discussed with Ichiban Records back in 1995, but interference from a long time associate of Jay Money and DJ Suicide killed all negotiations. Toward the end of 1995, Basement Society returned to the studio and recorded 3 new songs for a maxi-single called "Raw Power Move." But, due to conflicts within the crew, it was never released. The Basement never broke up, but certain members went their seperate ways. In 2000, all 5 of the Basement members appeared on stage together, impromptu, of course, at the Black Sheep/Das Efx concert in Lincoln, NE. This appearance alone outshined the opening act.

Tony Touch “The Sunz Of Man Mixtape” (1998)

Back in the day, I was a crazy Wu-Tang collector. That meant picking up anything and everything I could get my hands on, including any Wu-Fam releases. Here is the promo mixtape sampler for Sunz Of Man's first album “The Last Shall Be First” mixed by none other than Tony Touch. To me, this is exactly how you promote your upcoming album (in 1998 at least): get a very well known DJ, put on some album tracks, add some exclusives, throw in some freestyles and hand out this promo cassette to everyone you can.

Note: Side 2 is exactly the same as Side 1, so I didn't bother uploading it. But I did include a full scan of the sleeve and both sides of the cassette.

02. We Can't Be Touched (featuring Makeeba)

Touring The States: Pittsburg, CA

I searched all over the internet to try to find out the names of these two MCs, but I couldn't find anything. Then I decided to ask 3xkrazy, who ripped this tape himself, but with no luck. There are no names printed anywhere in the tape's cover. The only bit of information that I found on the internet is that this tape is a rare release out of Pittsburg (California) that was sought by many before finally it was ripped. As you can see, this tape is short, but the two tracks are good. Try it yourself.

Touring The States: Dallas, TX

I was enjoying this album last two weeks. This group is coming out from Dallas, North Dallas to be precise. At the moment i don't know exact about member names, but i think actually that i'm pretty sure it was Cho, Dallas Long and D.J. Flex. If im wrong, feel free to correct me, it would be appreciated. You may know Dallas Long by, nowadays name, Mista Long. Both sides of this tape are edible. My favourite song on this album is track "Choc-Lit-Sit-E". The beat is very smooth and mellow, although you can check it yourself down there in the samples player.

Touring The States: San Francisco, CA

First of all, I know there are numerous classic releases outta San Francisco. I've heard a lot of them, but this one I found randomly over the internet. My first reason to download this was (IMO) its excellent cover. I also desired to hear something that I haven't heard about before as well as some very positive comments about this album. I also read many different comments about this album's release year. Some wrote 1994, some 1997, but i found a clear cassete picture on the Great Scott discogs with 1997 marked on it, so if you know true story about the year of this release, feel free to tell me. Meanwhile, peep this release. It is a worthy download, believe me. You can always check samples down there.

Stay tuned, cause soon we will present you some more San Francisco goodness.

Touring The States: Forestville, MD

Chink - Capers (1995)

This dope MC is coming out of Forestville, Maryland. For a foreigner like me, the only thing that reminds me on Maryland is the Homicide series. I remember talking with friends and wondering about how rap from states and cities, besides NY, LA, NJ, Chicago, or Boston might sound. In the era of super fast internet we can download and search about it within seconds. This is the main point of starting Touring The States series - to present you with some good albums, some great albums, some classic albums, and albums that simple have a great vibe. It might happen that there are better albums out there, but undoubtedly the albums that we serve to you are 100% enjoyable if your ears are open for some music from outside NY and LA. This album by Chink is one of them. Though it is short, it is a must have in your collection. I don't know much about him, so as I always say, if you have some more info, feel free to tell us. Thanks.

Touring The States: Riverside, CA

Riverside is a city located in the Inland Empire in Southern California. It is also the county seat of Riverside County. The city is named for the nearby Santa Ana River. Big Meech, as y'all already realized, is coming out of Riverside. This should be the one and only piece of music released by Big Meech, but don't take this info for granted. I was searching all over the internet and wasn't able to find any additional info. Discogs says that this single is Big Meech from Miami, a member of BMF, but personally I think this is mistake. So, please, feel free to correct me if you know something more about all of that. You will enjoy this short but excellent single, even if you don't like that Cali, g-funk vibe. The songs are very very smooth and relaxing. Like the title says "We're Just Cruzin'"; for sure this will make you want to burn it for the ride. Enjoy.

Side A
01. Big Meech - We're Just Cruzin' (Radio Version)
02. Big Meech - We're Just Cruzin' (Remix Extended Version)
03. Big Meech - We're Just Cruzin' (Instrumental Radio Version)

Side B

Crustified Dibbs - Night Of The Bloody Apes(Remastered)

We come to you today bearing bad news in one hand and a gift in the other. T.R.O.Y. forum resident blendologist supreme, vaporized, has been struck with the hardship of a completely broke down laptop. Thus rendering him incapable of contributing any more monumental blends or mixes until he obtains a new workstation. I will list below all the incredible work that was done by vaporized, in the past 6 months, and wish him a full online recovery.

Before vaporized lost his laptop powers, he left us with this nice piece of work that cannot be found anywhere else in the blogosphere or message board realm. He took the initiative to remaster the highly sought after shelved debut album by
Crustified Dibbs called Night Of The Bloody Apes. According to discogs, this was released on CD, but as far as I knew it was only on cassette. I don't claim that this is CDQ or VBR, but it sounds a hell of a lot better than the versions that have been floating around the web for the past years. I don't even claim that this is a classic album in any shape or form. To be honest, the album is, well,......pretty bad. But, for me, it's worth having just for the frustrated emcee anthem Every Record Label Sucks Dick. Included as a bonus cut is the Biggie Smalls featured cut Cunt Renaissance Remix.

Previews:

Crustified Dibbs - Every Record Label Sucks Dick

Crustified Dibbs(ft. Biggie Smalls) - Cunt Renaissance Remix

If you weren't aware, Crustified Dibbs went on to become RA The Rugged Man and has released music much better than this album, in my humble opinion. I believe on that Cunt Renaissance Remix above, he had already changed his name for that record. Check him out here for some more recent tracks and info. Here's a few joints you probably already know by him -

R.A. The Rugged Man(ft. Agallah) - Till My Heart Stops

R.A. The Rugged Man(ft. Sadat X) - 50,ooo Heads Remix

R.A. The Rugged Man(ft. Blackmarket Militia) - The Renaissance
