Juggaknots - Dopeness In Less Than 2 Minutes

All of us could agree that Juggaknots never succeed at the mainstream level, but their 1996 release was an underground hit, a true classic. When it was was re-released in 2003 with 11 additonal tracks (including some unfinished songs) their notoriety only grew, even though fame still eluded them.



Most will agree that these shorter songs are pure gold and wished that they were completed. Tracks like "Watch Ya Head (Remix)" or "Come Along" are pure gold, even better than some so called classics of that time. Breezly kills every verse.

One Year Bitches

So we've been building this blog for a year now. Our first post was on 9/30/08. At the time, we figured we would mostly cover the material people were posting in our forums. We soon realized that we had diverse content to share by the truckloads, and we expanded into exclusive interviews, homegrown remixes, analytical essays, guest blogging spots, and more.



As we grew in popularity, we attracted praise and denunciation from every walk of online hip hop life. Folks as far away as Indonesia praised us for dropping gems they would have otherwise never heard and for contributing greater insight than the average upload blog. Meanwhile, some people felt we didn't give enough credit where it was due or simply that we were funk faking human shade trees. No matter your opinion, we definitely garnered your attention: in only one year, 1,000+ heads subscribe to our RSS feed and many more follow us through other means.



To celebrate a year in the game, we have compiled our most noteworthy links and organized them by category. We urge you to give old posts a new chance. If you're a vinyl fiend who never found a Now Born Click b-side demo he didn't like, check out one of the sample compilations for a change. Here it is! One Leg Up Records comes through with another batch of unreleased tracks and demo mixes. This time they ran down on Puba for some ill Brand Nubian joints most of us never knew about. I'm typing this in advance so you can get this download asap.

From the snippets, "How Ya Livin'", "Mind Your Business"(original mix), and "Probable Cause"(original mix) are sounding incredible. "Love Vs. Hate"(alternative mix) sounds basically the same, except Sadat kicks a completely different verse. There might be minor differences with the beat, but nothing that I immediately noticed.

“How Ya Livin’” is a previously unheard of demo recorded prior to “One For All” and it is produced by none other than, the chocolate boy wonder, Pete Rock! The vintage track comes complete with the Soul Brother #1's trademark cuts as well. “I Ain’t Goin’ Out Like That” is an uptempo early Nubian joint as well. On this track you hear Puba taking parting shots at Strong City Records and declaring that both his Masters of Ceremony days and style is over! “The Devil” is a conscious record, that was scrapped prior to “One For All”, but serious Grand Puba fans will undoubtedly recognize that the hook and song concept was later revisited for the track “Soul Controller” on Puba’s debut LP, “Reel To Reel”. “Mind Your Business”, as you might recall, was a b-side only track released during “Reel To Reel”. This original version sports a Hall and Oates sample that could not be cleared, prompting Dante Ross / Stimulated Dummies to remix the song for the 12”. Fortunately in 2009, the version that Grand Puba preferred is finally available to collectors. “Where is Puba?” is somewhat of an early version of “Check It Out”. The vocalist that appears on this track was an artist who Puba was recording with before Mary J. Blige. The original version of “Probable Cause” features a different beat then the one that made the final version of “Foundation”. As you might recall, the released version used the Grover Washington Jr. “Knucklehead” sample (best known on K-Solo’s “Fugitive”). This version is a LOT better in my opinion and I have no idea why they changed it? Last but not least, the “Love vs. Hate” alternate version treats us to a completely different Sadat X vocal performance and still maintains to be a favorite from the “Foundation” project.

Kurtis Blow - Live @Greek Theatre LA (9.13.09)

Kurtis Blow performs the classics live at The Greek Theatre in LA on Sept. 13, 2009. I originally wanted to post the live video footage but I was too far from the stage(big venue) so it was hard to really see anything except to hear the sound. Fortunately, I kept the audio and it's sounds great! The only thing that dissapointed me about the concert is that Kurtis Blow only performed for 25 minutes. One problem also is that the speakers went out when he performed the first verse of "Basketball". I embedded a video below which shows the live performance of The Breaks(props to the uploader). The breakdancing is incredible, Kurtis Blow still got it!!!

New Jersey Underground Part 7 (1990-1997)

These New Jersey compilations seem to have a following so I'm posting volume 7 today. Many of these tracks came from Tony D's vaults. It's too bad much of it was never formally released. You fans of that early/mid 90s Jersey boom bap are going to love this collection. Some of this material might be familiar, but I am hoping most of what you hear on this will be new to your ears.
