Mos Def & MF DOOMsday Disaster

I wasn't able to make it to the Mos Def & MF Doom show last weekend, so I had my boy Marvin write a review. This is just a heads up warning to anybody else that is planning on attending one of their shows.

--dirt_dog

"I have had bad experiences with concerts at the Congress Theater before. I once paid 30 bucks to see the Wu-Tang Clan – back when I was in high school & when $30 represented a lot more than it does to me today. When I counted only 7 actual members (there had to be like 30 folks on stage), and I noticed that Method Man was rapping Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s parts, I was, um, disappointed to say the least. So when I saw that Mos Def and MF Doom were coming to the Congress, I was apprehensive. After the concert got rescheduled, I was even more apprehensive. But a bunch of my friends were going, and I didn’t want to be the odd man out. So I paid $30 once again, hoping that the Congress would redeem itself.

I would have been more entertained if I stayed home and watched the NBA’s sorry dunk contest.

First of all, doors opened at 7pm. I know better than to show up right when the doors open because normally acts don’t hit the stage until 2 to 3 hrs afterwards. But, due to having to wait on a late friend, I didn’t arrive until after 11pm, fully expecting to walk in on the performance. Nope. I arrived to see an empty stage with a lone DJ playing old songs. My friends had been there for hours and had only seen 2 opening acts. An hour after I arrived, the crowd started to get a little antsy; I can’t say I blame them. People started booing and throwin’ things on stage. Finally, after the stage got saturated in empty drink cups and water bottles, Mos Def appears. This calmed folks down for a while, though occasionally a water bottle would fly up on stage. You can tell the crowd really wanted to get into Mos; we didn’t pay $30 to see a shady MF Doom. Sadly, Mos DEFinitely disappointed. He performed about 25 minutes worth of his new album (
Ecstatic) mixed with a few cuts from Black on Both Sides. Then “MF Doom” emerged to join the stage with him. At this point I am thinking to myself “great – now we can have a real hip-hop show,” thinking that they would take this time to perform together. Nope. Mos left the stage, and what was left were 2 hype men, one of whom we were supposed to believe was MF Doom. It was a lip-synching imposter.

Now, you would think the crowd would have gone crazy tearing the place apart at this point. But instead, just a general disappointment settled in. I think many people were, like me, a little sad also. We expected more from Mos; we paid $30 hoping to see a performance that would rival those of his former counterpart, Talib Kweli, who is known for giving riveting performances. What we got was a very unprofessional, un-motivated performance from an aging artist who may be more interested in acting than rapping right now (
Note to Mos Def: Do not give shout outs to Brooklyn while in other cities. Especially in Chicago. You’re lucky you didn’t get hit with a bottle to the face for that). We knew there was a chance that “DOOM” wouldn’t show as he's notorious for that. But we had hoped that Mos Def would make up for any disappointment DOOM might bring. Nope…"

Top 10 Cali 90's Joints That You Probably Can't Find
by Superstar Quamallah

1.
"To Whom It May Concern" (compilation)/ Freestyle Fellowship:
Microphone Myke as i knew him was doing shit on this album that cats ain't never been able to even bite! i saw him freestyle over "mo' better blues"at the good life cafe doing a style that was so ahead of it's time, it would take a worm hole for mcs to check it! this album, which they put out themselves in 1991, was a catalyst and a much have for any true collector of the music. find it!

2.
The '93 til Infinity DEMO/ Souls of Mischief:
I got this joint on a cassette tape and i remember when they were putting the joint together to catch their deal. i rolled up to del's (the funky homosapien) house with andre (the emperor) and adam (A-plus) was laying scratches for the last song. they got some joints on this cassette that never came out or were different versions like "never no more" is different and crazy fresh yo!
maybe somebody got this on ebay but i doubt it!

3.
Barber Shop MC's DEMO/ Barber Shop MCS:
not sure if this was a demo but i remember defari letting me hear these cats and i was like this cat phil tha agony is sick to def!!! i can't find that cassette i had, but these joints were so ahead of their time as well.

4. "
Change and Switch"/ Defari:
this joint is a personal fav because i remember heru asked me to lay the scratches on this cut and we did it at kutmaster kurt's crib and a young evidence, who made the beat i believe, was there chillin and i thought damn these some cool dudes. i told heru that that song was the joint and a few months later it was the b-side as one of the first records to launch abb records in 1997.

5.
Planet Asia EP/ Planet Asia:
man what can i say about my man asia that ain't already been said. this was one of the hungriest mcs i've ever met and he still gets it in! this joint was released on heratik records in 1998 and if you can find a copy, you done came up!

6.
"People's Choice"/Defari:
gotta mention this joint cause it's one of my favorite underground singles man that really set off that classic evidence heru connection and heru's offbeat on flow on this was classic and spawned
a lot of imitators whether people recognize or not. i remember when beni played the acetate for me at kalx, i was like - "wheeeeeeew weeeeee....classic!"

7.
"The Hiero vs. Hobo Junction (Saafir) Battle"/:
this is one of the greatest and most enjoyable mc battles ever done on the radio and i know
copies are floating around! this was easily one of saafir and casual's greatest off the head lyrical drudge matches and nobody from both sides on the mic was a disappointment! it went down around 1994 and you can't say nothing about cali mcs if you never heard this battle! a historical moment fo' sho'!!!

8. Del tha Funky Homosapien DEMO:
i met del in 1988/89 in berkeley. he'soriginally from new york and he had the mc skills to pay the bills way back then as a shorty! but his music production was through the roof. his
sampling abilities were ahead of his time and when he got his deal, i believe his cousin ice cube had a major influence on the style and sound of his first album. but his shit i got on some cassette tapes would be compared to current shit mf doom is doing. del is definitely from another
planet and cats ain't getting copies of the shit i got with him on it! lol

9.
RIP Government/ Stevie Jay, Velvet B, Adam (Buck), and more:
these cats put a record out and my joint is in storage so i don't remember the name
but they were all from nyc and living in south central los angeles back in the late 80's. they was doing shit to break beats before cats was on that out in cali and had hooked up with whipple whip, the original. these cats had a major influence on cats within jurassic five as well as many others whom they shared rhyme cyphers wit. if you can find this record (rip government is the name of the crew) then i salute you!

10.
"JazzHopSoul"/ Clever Jeff:
this is actually my favorite hiphop album by a cali artist and one of the most underrated or slept on joints for anyone who digs pete rock& cl smooth or gang starr! this cat was one of
the first to perfect the jazz soul hiphop fusion and was working with quincy jones' label but they didn't know how to promote the project back in 1994. clever is at his best on this lyrically with smooth knowledge and those 90's jazzy joints i can never get enough of! a must have for anyone
serious about the music!

T.R.O.Y. Guest Blogger w/Jean Grae

Last week we brought you Blockhead and his 3 stellar mixes. This week we bring you none other than Ms. Jean Grae and her Top 10 90's Hip-hop tracks To Wallow In Pity To.

10. Mobb Deep - Where Your Heart At feat. Kool G. Rap - Whoooooooo killer. This actually could make me go buy Henny. This shit sounds like a henny dipped blunt. On a hot summer night coming back to Brooklyn over the bridge, everyone in the car is just quiet, looking
out the window. Yeah, that!

9. Pete Rock & CL Smooth - Searching - I think because of the whole "Searching" Roy Ayers sample. Just theme of it. It's pretty in a sad chord sort of way.

8. The Boogiemonsters - Old Man Jacob's Well- Dark and creepy.

7. Eminem - Just Don't Give A Fuck - I don't. Cept when I do, then I
have to listen to this song to remember why I don't and that it's ok. Like a mantra.
Miss Em.. Miss him.

6. De La Soul - Millie Pulled A Pistol On Santa - Yeah, this song is
just...man.. it's amazing storytelling and hey I'm not Millie, so that makes life better.

5. Organized Konfusion - Black Sunday- I have to explain?

4. A Tribe Called Quest - Midnite - It reminds me of my senior prom. I went alone, had a crap time, then ended up walking home in the rain alone. The one good moment I can remember, is when this joint came on. We were on the boat, the whole dance floor was just dark and EVERYONE was feeling this shit. In a dark NY nod your heads, dance with your headdown and one hand up sort of way.

3. Nas - Drunk By Myself - Aww lemme tell you. First off, this bootleg
version of The Lost Tapes is one of my all time favorite things. It kinda got me through
the weird point I was at. This song was what I wanted to do, except I don't drive and if I did, I would certainlyNOT keep my firearm under my seat for the coppers to get.

2. Jean Grae - Keep Living - It's the first solo song I wrote after Natural Resource was no more. Real different from what we were doing as a group and turned out to be a great piece of talk therapy for me and a real excellent way to end a show. Plus, it's ended beef and made
grown men cry.

1. Jay-Z - Regrets - Guru ruined this for me at the Nokia show where
RIGHT before everything started, he whispered in my ear, "he's doing
the whole album backwards!!" I was like, "Aww man, you couldn't have waited 5 seconds for me to be surprised!?!?!" But it was cool, cause I could have missed it by going to the bar.

Got your own top 10 list? Post it here.

Got the Jeanius album? Buy it here.

T.R.O.Y. Guest Blogger w/Blockhead

what's up everyone,
the good folks at the TROY blog have allowed me to compile a few mixes for your listening pleasure. one is a compilation of oft forgotten posse cuts from the good old days. these were made back when , not only did well known mc's come together and make songs, but complete unknowns jumped on tracks just for the hell of it. often it was the unknown heads that shined on these tracks.

the second is a mix of rude sex raps..well, not all of them are about sex but they're all pretty offensive towards the fairer sex. so, listener beware. it's a little known fact that i love me some ignorant shit and this mix is pretty much the cream of the crop.

the final mix is a bunch of often overlooked joints. these are songs i've always loved but were most likely lost in the shuffle of album tracks or simply overlooked for no good reason.

enjoy...
